Nah turbo is rated at 800hp. Currently my motor is putting out around 400hp @ the fly posted by  57ock

Rice Rocket is something old American Motorcycle guys used to call Japanese street bikes. The term has since migrated to Japanese cars. posted by  Widowmaker2k

What makes you think that a car with dual 5" exaust tips, fake hood pins/race clips and LED washer jets is tasteful?

We've already established that - Arthur pointed out the fact that the term "rice rocket" pertains back to Japanese motorbikes and then I said that the term has since migrated to Japanese cars. posted by  snoopewite

Ok, before f&f came out was there such term as "rice"? posted by  suprarx7TT

Well around here "rice" has been around for along time. But it didnt mean really nice fast import cars with small engines, but more rather. Base model civics or something with minimal mods, just like a mismatched body kit, and a coffee can for a tailpipe. Driven by people who thought their car was the ultimate shiznit...I wouldnt concider F&F cars "ricers" 9 sec quarter with traps over 140 mph. posted by  labido

the name "rice" or "ricer" just came around cuz they are japanese cars, and they eat rice in japan posted by  mazda6man

Ohhh that makes sense I never really knew that lol. posted by  suprarx7TT

well the way i got started down here is we always said all those motors are good for is burning rice hence the name rice burner or ricer, because they come from japan and thats what they eat there. posted by  73-440-Cuda

oh well, no matter how the name came about, it still means a little japanese car that goes fast. posted by  PodunkPunk

of course, not all "ricers are fast" i mean, ive seen rice cook faster than a civic hit 60mph haha posted by  mazda6man

I have a honda accord and im in the process of tuning it up. I'm trying my hardest not too rice it out. I have dual pipes(both on 1 side) so they dont look like those big coffee cans. I'll just tune the engine even though i know honda accord rnt fast to begin with, and on the outside some carbon fiber altezzs , z3 fenders, and gun metal konig rims, and me lower it. posted by  suprarx7TT

lol, I'm sorry, I was just answering the man's question, I didn't have time to read the whole thing. posted by  Widowmaker2k

Hey, I never said that fake hood pins and LED washer tips are tasteful. A Supra, with 700hp under the hood, is not rice. They can add ugly stuff to make it look dumb (like the washer tips), which would make it on the verge of being ricey. I was not referring to a specific Supra, just the car in general.

HOWEVER...
The term "rice" refers to a car which is overstyled without any performance mods. A car with 700hp and fake hood pins is not rice, just ugly. :P posted by  TM875

oh come on now, explain does your car have 800hp or is the turbo able to produce that much. posted by  Arthur

TM875, I noticed how you wrote, "the 700bhp Supra" and not, "a 700bhp Supra" so I thought that you must have been refering to the only 700bhp Supra mentioned in this topic.
As for what is 'rice' and what isn't, it's always going to be a grey area where people have their own opinions on it.
It's been interesting what different people have had to say in this topic though. posted by  snoopewite

The term "rice" is a bit of a grey area. "Rice rockets" are fast Japanese cars but any cars that have been modifyed in bad taste, no matter what their origin can get called "ricers". That would mean that a 700bhp Supra with dual 5" exhaust tips, fake hood pins/race clips and LED washer jets would be a "rice rocket" and a "ricer" ) posted by  snoopewite

the terms kinda been over used around here, ive have friends that call a 70 year old woman in a accord a ricer. it pisses me off, just because a car is imported doesnt mean its rice. Its the guys that do it all in poor taste that are ricers. Lets not forget about all the domestic rice rippin around out there *cough cavaliers *cough posted by  84_Jetta_GLi

actually i think "rice rocket" pertains to the japanese motorcycles posted by  Arthur

aahh if you dont want to rice it, forget lowering it for looks forget the z3 fenders, forget altezza taillights"those belong on altezzas".

maybe a carbon fiber hood. get a set of Good coil overs, its a spring and shock combined, made to go with each otther its better than buying springs at one time then shocks at another. work on the motor the most and dont get those shitty dressup kits either if you arent going to turbo it then go higher compression lighter rods higher compression pistons maybe knife edge the crank i dunno But let looks mostly be the last thing you do and dont get big ass heavy 18 inch rims either go 16" 17 at the most go for light rims and stay away from focals "they are pure shit and they Break alot under stress" and stay away from chrome rims they are heavy. posted by  Arthur

Maybe that is where the term came from but now it's used when refering to fast Japanese cars as well. posted by  snoopewite

Japanese Cars will always been known as "Rice". The Same way we call American / Australian Cars "Bogan"

No matter what you try to do. Someone will call it rice. :)
I drive a rice car. Its looks factory from the outside. But has a 800hp turbo under the bonnet. But it has 3 gauges and a rice boost controller.
So its rice. posted by  57ock

waaa? what do you mean by 800hp turbo? do you mean your running a turbo that could give you that much power or that you are running 800hp?? posted by  Arthur

Simple formula

$ of style products > $ of performance products = Rice

Someone who owns a stock Japanese vehicle is not rice. Someone who actually makes good performance mods and keeps the vehicle tasteful is not rice (like the 700hp Supra). Someone who just wants to make his vehicle more comfortable or unique, while keeping tasteful, is not rice (for example, adding REAL European parts onto a Focus).

Ricers are people (typically 25 and below) that think if they own a Civic and add a big sticker in the window that says "CIVIC" their car will go faster. Just having the NOS sticker does not add power. Orange wings do not make you look cool. Carbon fiber, especially fake carbon fiber, that is not painted is ugly. More people need to think before they waste money. posted by  TM875

to me, not all hondas and other japanese cars are rice. rice to me, is nothing but crappy imports that look like crap, and run like crap. dont get me wrong, of course most people start with the basics of a body kit, muffler, and intake, but the instance that person thinks they're car is king "ish" then it kinda developes into "rice" (unless of course theyre car is king ish to begin with) i think rice has a very complex meaning... oh and i consider some people rice as well, (not japanese people) i mean stupid people with cars that do stupid things to theyre car......

all in all i dont think i made a lot of sense in my typing, but it works in my head... haha, i dunno, i hope it makes sense

tell me if the whole thing made anysense please posted by  mazda6man

mazda6man, your post made sense to me ) I think the term that you were looking for is a 'rice boy' - The driver of the 'ricer'. posted by  snoopewite

thanks
and im glad it made sense too posted by  mazda6man

This is something that we towed in the other day, and yes it qualifies as a ricer. Note the custom stripes, super snazzy "rims", and the extra emblems on the decklid. Sorry about the quality I used my pocket camera. 8) posted by  vwhobo

Little does the owner of that car know that the owner of the shop that it had been towed to has taken pictures of it and put them on the internet lol posted by  snoopewite

Yeah , well..... It doesn't really matter much. It was a city call. He was arrested for no drivers license, registration, insurance, DUI, evading arrest, and possesion of a controlled substance. Oops! 8) posted by  vwhobo

those are some pretty slick hubcaps eh? posted by  mazda6man

He must have been on that controlled substance when he did all the mods on that car :P posted by  84_Jetta_GLi

exactly, whats he doin putin chevy logos on a 626? posted by  mazda6man

aside from the stripes and the chevy stickers im betting those wheels came stock with the car. Alot of cars have shitty wheels like that posted by  Arthur

Well, no, those were Wal-Mart special "euro racing style with simulated brake rotors". And missing simulated lug nuts too. posted by  vwhobo

Hmm, i posted this a while back! And after a long time of not coming here i come back and its still the first one up?! posted by  suprarx7TT

to me, "rice" is an import that has an outrageous body kit, big exaust, stupid looking spoiler, clear tailights, one windshield wiper going across the whole windshield, stickers on exterior, changed emblems, etc.

It just doesn't make sense why people would do that to their cars. posted by  musclefan
