its actually quite an easy question. i was wondering if i was missing any
other engine types in production cars other than those that i will mention
below. so this is a quick and easy thread.
In-line: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8
V: 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16
W: 8, 12, 16, 18
Flat/Boxer/H/Horizontally Opposed: twin, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12
Wankle Rotary: 2, 3, 4
Other: VR6, V5 (its just an inline with the pistons arranged at an angle,
it was an odd explanation which i still dont get).
ok, some of the engines werent used in actual production cars, such as the
F12 which was only used in race cars (as far as i know atleast). but thats
everything ive heard of that has been used in a car. others were mainly
used on very few cars (such as the V4 and V5), while others were mainly
used in bikes (V-twins), but some cars had them (really compact ones).
anymore additions and corrections or info on this?

I'm just going to comment on one thing. You can't have a V5 engine. V
engines have an even # of cylinders for balance. The Acura Vigor had an I-5
engine as does the new Colorado truck.
thunderbird1100
there IS a V5 engine. ever bothered checking the VW V5 engine? its an
inline 5 but the cylinders are arranged at an angle, and called the V5
Inygknok
Must have been a POS engine. Don't make them anymore. Probably was at a
slight V angle, hard to make an engine balanced in a V arrangement when you
have an odd # of cylinders. Probably why no manfacuturer has picked up on
it. Just like no manfacuturer picked up on rotaries.
thunderbird1100
Sorry but there still a company that makes V5 engines. Volvo has them in
their S40R, S60 and i believe the VC70
Coffin Type R
Ever heard of a little company called Mazda?
abless
actually, it IS still being produced and its not a bad engine at all. Here
(http://www.vw.co.za/models/jetta/specs.php) is a link to one of the VW
sites on Europe (or somewhere near it). it is found on the VW Bora (aka
the Passat over here), and on the new Beetle Turbo S.
also, remember the VR6? its basically the same concept, only that its
designed even better. its basically the combination of a V engine with an
inline with a 15 degree angle. if u didnt know (which apparently u dont
since u dismissed the V5 idea so promptly), the VR is a combination of the
Vee (obviously of the V type engines) and the R is a German word meaning
Reihenmotor, and both words combined and translated would pretty much mean
"Vee in-line".
Inygknok
I checked Volvo's website and it said nothing of a V5 engine. Never said
Inline either. But from what i grasp from the technical specs it looks to
be an Inline engine.
thunderbird1100
Ever heard of DUH. Thought that would be implied since EVERYONE knows Mazda
has had rotaries in some of their cars for over 2 decades now. My point was
no OTHER manfacturer other than them has picked up on it.
thunderbird1100
You sure the U.S. gets that V5? I've never seen any VW with a true V
engine. Thought we only get the 1.8 2.0 2.8 and 1.9 in the smaller cars
(with the exclusion of the 3.2 in the R32 and W8 in the passat etc..).

check ur local dealership :P

Okay... the concept of inline, v, and boxer engines are simple to me... but
can someone explain the W engine layout as well as others so long as it
isnt too confusing...im not stupid though so it musn't be idiot proof.
VMJYogi
oh yes. also if u want to explain the rotary engine for me (that is one
that im very interested in). and the flat/boxer/H/horisontally opposed
engine are all the same right? (just to make sure). Im also guessing that
the W engine is like two v engines placed next to each other?
VMJYogi
Nope, no V5's here in the U.S. according to VW's website.
thunderbird1100
It doesn't explain much but it's a nice vid about W12 engines.

Then, "Legends from 1001 HP" and "360 View" and "Tech Data" should appear
on the bottom.

ok, W engines. the W engines are actually based on the VR6 concept. its
technically 2 V8 engines one on top of the other. just imagine one V8
engine at, for example, 80 degrees, and another one right underneath it,
hugging it tightly and sharing the same heads and the same one block, but
at 90 degrees. the cylinders of the bottom V8 engine would come out right
next to the top one's cylinders, but on the outside section. meaning, the
cylinders on the left head of the engine, the one with 90 degrees with be
at the left (outside) an dthe one with 80 degrees will be on the right
(inside). click on the pictures below to see how the cylinder heads look
like.
as for the rotary, its basically just a triangle shaped object called a
rotor spinning around in circles, both in an orbital manner and rotational
manner (like Earth does around the sun and on its axis) inside a big
oval-like shaped place called the housing.
there are some pics below with rotary engines in it. i also put some gifs
since animations always work so much better for explanations.

animations.

Ford had a V4 in the 70's they made throusands of them, not very nice
engines though.

Smart do a flat 3 diesel.
cinqyg
wat company is Smart? (someone will probably give a smartassed answer
before i really get told who they are)
Inygknok
There a division of daimler chyrsler. They make small city cars, there so
short that you can park them perpendicular to the curb
cinqyg
Smart was founded by DaimlerChrysler in the late nineties for producing a
micro class car at the european market (the first was a two seater). It was
developed in California by Harald Belker. :smoke:

Volvo's 5cylinder engine is Inline and not in a vee  ...I belive
Cliffy
yea, Volvo's 5 cylinder is an inline. 4 companies currently use that type
of inline engine, but i cant remember them all. i believe 2 of them were
Volvo and Audi.

Chevy/GMC use an Inline 5 in the Colorado/Canyon

This is a nice thread why did you guys let it die out.
Dammit, I had a dream I created a W12 engine(although it was far more
complex than cramming the angles of one v6 an stuffing it beween the the
intakes on another v6. I should have patented my idea I'd be filthy
rich.
Umm this V4 and V5 fascinate me anyone have any pics. I'm far to lazy to
search.

I'm going to post here the direct animations just for those who wish to see
quick animations of some of the engines.

Sorry about not having animations on the W and other engines, but they are
so rare that it's extremely hard to find animations that can be linked
to.
Animations are all thanks to the courtesy of howstuffworks.com and

I believe that a 2004 Volvo S60(R) haver 5 cylinder engines in them. I
think its V5 It may be Inline 5
DSMer
I'm pretty sure it's Inline 5. My friend's mom has an S80 or something. I
looked under the hood. I'm pretty sure I remember it being an inline 5.
