Hello to All
I have a problem I need to answer and am writing to see if any of you knowledgeable people can help. I have a 302 2v motor out of a 78 or 79 fairmont that I am going to build to install into my 63 round body falcon, when looking for a crank kit I have been asked to provide the casting numbers from the old crank. Now here is the problem, for the life of me I can’t find the old crank I have looked everywhere and no crank. I am to understand that I have two choices a crank stamped “2M, 2MA, 2MBA, or 2MAD” all of which will fit and is the most common application or a crank stamped “2MAE” which will cause vibration problems if the wrong crank is used. I’m sure the block didn’t change so can anyone tell me how to resolve this problem? Is it just a matter of choosing the right balancer and flywheel? I don’t want to have to have a trail by error, had too many of those in the past. I don’t want to have to start from scratch because I already have $250.00 in the block. I am also open to any and all suggestions towards the remaining pieces of the engine. I’m trying to get around 300+ horses with mostly stock parts. I would like to thank you in advance for taking the time to read this and help if possible.
Im not quite sure on the crank casting numbers for that year of the 302, but I think its 2MBA.
Given any thought to putting in a 347 crank?
I think '78 -'80 had either 2M or 2MA, but generally 2M = 28.2 oz. '81-'86 were 2MAE = 50oz
You took the words right out of my mouth Wally. The 28.2 Oz imbalance crank would be in standard 5.0L models, whereas the H.O. engine used a 50 Oz imbalance...it doesn't make any sense to me, because the 28.2 Oz was stronger(that's what they use for stroker cranks).
Thanks for the help, in the future I'm going to get a whole lot more radical but for now I need to get the car running and of course theres a budget. Thanks again!
