I have a 89 Ford Tempo AWD, which will not go into 4wd. It has a switch on the ceiling panel, but when pressed, nothing happens. There is a clicking sound in the dashboard, but it stays in FWD mode. I can't find a book that includes the awd models. Have checked all the fuses, all good.
Any ideas would be appreciated, especially since the snow keeps coming down. This is the first time it has failed me.
I want more info. I've heard of the AWD Tempo, but only in passing. They
are a very rare automobile indeed. I read that they only exist in Diesel
Anyway, I have no idea what the problem is (as this is the first "direct" interaction I've had with one). It very well could be an electric or vacuum solenoid is used to engage the transfer case (very similar to the front end engagement on many 4WD GM/Mopar products... maybe Ford too). So, just pulling an answer out of my a@#, I'm going to guess you have a failing solenoid.
