Ok I have a 1988 Chrysler 5th avenue that I want to put an After Market
head unit in, but I have a little issue.
I'm looking for wire harness kits and I found 2 different ones
http://www.discountcarstereo.com/detail.aspx?ID=274 (this one is an amplifier as well)
http://www.installer.com/item/display_item.php?it=71-1817 (standard kit)
I'm not sure which one to use, because I have no idea if I have a premium sound system or not. I would figure since I am putting in a new stereo I wouldnt need an amplifier, because I thought that the new headunits had them built in?
This is the headunit that Iam putting in http://www.discountave.net/kdkeexcarauc.html
Any input would be great :)
1. You have to determine if your car has (had?) the factory premium sound
because it had an external amp and different wiring. You can pretty much
tell by looking at the HU faceplate. It'll have words like "premium" right
2. Instead of piecing together a system based on a three year old discontinued model, then having to figure out how to mount, secure and wire it, why not just go to Crutchfield? You can get a KDC-X590, plus the appropriate wiring harness, plus the correct mounting hardware, plus a detailed step by step intallation, plus free telephone or online tech support, plus free shipping. It sounds a litte more expensive up front, but all the freebies make it cheaper in the long run.
I've never for the life of me been able to figure out why people do extra work and spend more money for a lower quality end product.
Well I already have the Headunit, Subs and speakers from my other car which is goin all JL, so I took everything out. I already have the mounting kit and all. All that I need to get is the wire harness. The OEM stereo doesnt have anything written on it all
If you have a pic of the original unit I can identify it for you.
Can you? Awesome I will post them tonight when I get out of work. I took
your advice and went onto Crutchfield.com and looked around and what I
found confused the hell out of me? Now I have installed many stereos in
cars, but they were newer cars. Maybe you can clean this up for me, under
where it says "Connections and Notes" what do they mean by an "additional
I believe they mean a wiring harness...just so you dont cut up the stock harness from the car. You splice the ends of that harness to the ones on your new cd player, and just plug and play
I can make this fairly simple for you. If it says Infinity on it anywhere or if it has an equalizer, it's premium sound. As for your question about Crutchfields note, your answer resides in the very next paragraph titled "Infinity Sound System Notes:".
Ok so if I dont have the infinity system I just need the basic adapter.
The buttons on radio are as follows:
Speaker selector (fader thing)
Tape deck and clock
It appears as though you have the standard system. If that's the case it's as simple as splicing the vehicle adaptor to the HU adaptor and plugging it all up.
I'm in the process of looking for a picture of the stereo in there now, :)
Good luck, I've been trying to do the same thing.
Wow this is amazing, I cant find a damn picture of the interior of a 1988 chrysler 5th avenue
Hey I finally found something. THis is NOT what is in there now, I repeat
IS NOT what is in my car.
Now I know this may or may not be the REAL factory infinity that came in the 5th avenue, but the radio that came with my car is NOT like this at all.
Volume (silver paddle lever)
Tune (sliver paddle lever)
Bass (rocker switch)
Treble (rocker switch)
Pre set buttons (1-5)
Speaker selector (same thing as in picture on bottom right corner)
and a few other buttons such as set, am/fm Etc.....
But it does not say infinity anywhere on it and does not have the EQ (bottom left of the picture)
Now the one that is in my car is a double din, but I think all of them are in these kinds of cars. So I hope this some what of a help.
That wouldn't have been in your car anyway. In '88 a CD player wasn't available from the factory yet. BUT, the Infinity AM/FM/cassette would have looked a lot like that with the obvious exception of cassette instead of CD.
Mine has everything the in the picture does except the Infinity logo, CD player, and EQ
