Your First Drive & Your First Car

Home  \  Classic Cars  \  Your First Drive & Your First Car

Okay, chilluns and Ancient Ones, Keep it short and sweet:
1] What was the (family) car you learned to drive on? The one you spent the most seat time in, not the sporty one your uncle Fritz let you drive once.
2] What was the first car you owned and titled to yourself? Whether purchased or hand-me-down. Where'd it come from?

Keep the lies to a minimum, please. You know who you are.

1] 1964 Corvair 4-door, 102 hp, manual 4-spd. Mom's car.
2] 1967 Camaro SS 350 4-spd, hand-me-down, Mom's 5-year old car. Really! No, really!

First drive was a rootbeer brown 1978 Chevy 3/4 ton 4X4 with a 350 and a 4spd (350, SM465, NP205, Dana 44, Corporate 14 bolt, best combination ever). Dad taught me to drive it when I was 6 in a field by our house. It took all the arm and leg strength I could muster to get the clutch to the floor. That was a great truck, can't believe he sold it when I was 15 (aagh).

First truck I titled myself (only person on title) was a 1998 Chevy Z71.

Well, technically it was a 1976 Honda Civic (first title), but I have never actually driven it... it's still a project.

So I guess I shouldn't mention that I actually owned a 1970 Road Runner and a 1973 Challenger as my first cars at the same time. :driving:

It's amazing how things change in 10 years. Picture a 1971 Buick Skylark and a 1972 Dodge Challenger. The mid '70's and '80's were truly dark times in automotive history, with few exceptions.

Truth be told, I have owned a couple of cars that I'm not proud of, including a 1978 Honda Civic and a 1981 Buick Skyhawk (Chev Monza lookalike).

the first car I got to drive was my folk's 1961 Renault 4CV. Almost identical to this one:

I learned how to actually drive on my own in my folk's '73 Pinto Squire wagon. Much like the one pictured above but olive green metallic instead of brown.

The first car that was mine (but, since I was still too young to have a title in my name) was my '62 Mercury Comet 2door sedan that I customized. This is the only pic I still have of it:

The majority of my "bought it myself" cars were bottom feeders: worn out 60 & 61 VW beetles with auto-clog carb jets, 72 Pinto hatchback, 73 Plymouth Scamp 318 (actually decent), 76 Buick LeSabre 231ci V6 (couldn't spin even one wheel by gunning the throttle from a left-turn stoplight on wet, 79 Plymouth Horizon, 63 Corvair blowing oil vapor through the heater ducts, 95 Ford Escort, current 74 Dodge Ram PU 231 V6. Owned some good stuff, owned some bad stuff, owned enough variety and interesting problems to have burned out a lot of my former brand loyalty arrogance. Enjoy what you got. And enjoy what others own too.

Thank you, boys. I just realized that even when you own a bad one, there's always a silver lining somewhere. Had one long ago that developed a gimpy starter and occasionally had to be push-started until I could take time to fix it or take it in to be fixed on a Saturday. One morning when leaving for work it wouldn't turn over and I needed a push. It weighed about 3200 lbs, and fortunately for me, my dear wife didn't know how to work the clutch well enough to kick it to life on a slow roll without stalling it again. I did though, and we only had about 75 feet to try on a cold start. Good thing she was young and strong, and not well-experienced in clutch use. That's two things to be thankful for. Yes, yes, the good old days... :screwy:

Well i learned to drive mostly in the Family 2.8 Diesel Hiace 14 seater commuter bus, which was actually illegal as we did not get it de registered as a bus, to a normal car so that was fun. I had fun driving the 7 other siblings and 2 parents about the place, apparently they trusted me. It was and is a fun bus to drive. I got my license in my dads 95 Bluebird, or which is a very rare car down in these parts, so that was a fun car, only drove it a handful of times.

Here is my first car ever. My EJ i speaken of

Unfortunately a 14 year old girl took her dad's car out for a joy ride and rear ended the Tempo while it was parked in front of our house. Right after I had done the ball joints, brakes, and rotors on the front end too. Never did get a chance to see what that Tempo could take. :ohcrap:

Made you think I had an accident before I got my license. My first owned car was a 1966 Mustang 2+2, black with white interior. Only a six cylinder, but I did change the heads from the stock, 200cid to the larger 250cid that came off I believe a truck motor.
