I am new to the whole classic restore. I have a 1976 Mercury Cougar XR7, I know it has a 351 but ir it a Windsor or Cleveland?
That is a hard question. I have been told that in 1976 they had both the 351 Windsor AND the 351 Cleavland in the Cougar XR7.
Will I be able to tell once I clean all of the gunk off the engine?
I've tried google searches and havnt found anything so i'm going by what my
dad says. Either you can run the block number or i think the Vin (if you
can find a site for it) or he said there should be a sticker by the rad
that should say, it would probably say 351W or 351C. Are you sure it is the
351? I'll keep looking to help more.
Sorry, didnt see that you know it is the 351.
Well the guy I got it from said it was a 351. I guess I should look into that too, before I figure if it's a Windsor or Cleveland.
Okay, that might help. I am willing to keep searchong for other ways to help or find out. You can always try decoding the Vin number, that might work.
the 351 windsor is a small block similar to the 302
the 351 clevland was replaced somewhere between 1971-73 with the 351m400 big block
if that didn't help the 351 windsor will have 16 bolts in the intake
and the 351m400 will have 12
car crazy right they where both avaliable
fairly easy to tell if you know each one.
I guess i was looking in the wrong places, i couldnt find a whole lot on either engine. Maybe i should specifically searched for each engine.
It's a Cleveland. Thanks for the help everyone.
