I have been thinking and looking into a prelude, I am leaving for basic training and will be comming home with about $2600 in the fall to put as either a down payment on a car ( keep in mind I have no credit and no co-signer but with a $2600 down I shouldnt have a problem picking up a $6000 car right ??? ) anyways, the preludes seem to be a little on the pricey side but there are other things that are possibilities. I am looking for advice on the best car that I can give a very nice turn around into a clean cut car, I wouldnt want to modify it heavily but I want to come out with 250-300HP total ... I want it to look hot but clean, I am not into some of the tacky things people put on there cars, and I want a car that can be taken seriously, not some neon or geo crap, honda, toyota, nissan, mazda etc etc. as stated before I want to pick up a car for about $5000-6000 and work on it piece by piece, I just need input on what I can get and what to put to get the looks and power I want. I have seen stories in magazines such as super street ... it was an artical about a guy who picked up a 1995 240sx with lower mileage for $5500 dollars, and now it is a clean cut machine, he has chameleon paint, wing, exhaust ( all the basics ) but he turned that cheaper car into an animal, I want to keep things as simple as possible so for what car you guide me to and what for parts you guide me to, I want to spend as little as possible to achieve the 250-300HP mark. :thumbs: HELP.

Anyways, you want to spend 6000$? What year of prelude? How much would you have to spare for mods? If this is a slow progress of upgrading, I would just look on the internet.

Well first of all bav, I will be comming home with about $2000 after taxes, isnt that a bunch of bull$*@&, we are off training to protect this countries freedom and we have to pay taxes, WOW. Ok, well I will have about $2600.00 including some spare cash I have, I am not looking for a prelude in specific but if I had the $10,000-$14,000 to get a 1997-2001 then I would do that in a heart beat but my financial situation just doesnt allow it... I have no credit and no co-signer or anyone to lend me money so I am out of luck on getting something through that method, I went to one of those inhouse financing dealerships but man are they expensive ! over charge and 17.9 % intrest, that is what it costs for someone who has NO credit. anyways, they had a few cars that were decent, a 1997 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro with 113,069 miles on it for $10,900 ahaha OUTRAGEOUS, it books for like $8,250.00 . I would be able to go that route ( the dealership that finances anyone ) and pay up the a$$ and get something better and have about $1500 just in spare cash to do some simple things and then the rest over time ... or I could take the $2600.00 to my credit union and find a car for $6,000.00 or so, I doubt I would get approved for anything more then that amount, and then slowly do things to it, I am just wondering what I should do, what I should get for that and what plans I should have for the car I do get, but then there IS eBay, where I could get something a hell of alot more decent for $6,000 then I could on private sale, in the end I dont want to spend years and years on the car, I like the simplistic style of a faster car with ponies but the clean cut look, like that BMW bav has the pic of, something no one would expect, I want 250-300HP when I am finished, I can live with that, but I also need the steps I should take to get the car looking how and how I want I am sure you realize that what car I do get would probobly have over 100,000 miles, how much does that matter? because I have seen hot cars before and then looked at the odometer and by the time the people got the car finished it has 182,000 miles on it, and it just totally takes the good feeling away, I just need to know what I should get, something respected like I said, No neons or escorts or any $*it like that, I cant stand seein a 4 door neon with a wing, one of those cheap dual prong mufflers from the local autoshop, I want my car to have some status, be original, etc etc. I really take inspiration to those stories you read of someone who bought a early 90s car and turned it into an animal, I want my car to be in IMaculate shape when I am done with it, no dings, scratches, etc etc, I think that makes a car a car, the condition, and yes I completely understand it may not be in that shape at all for the price I pay, but help me out with what I should get and how the process should be as far as what to take care of first, I am very serious about making the car my pride. :thumbs:
I was thinking a pre 1992 Prelude SI 5 Speed, or a 1992-1996 type Prelude, I have driven two of those ( 1992 and a 1994 both automatic ) and they were responsive as hell, great handling but they were both automatics, I wasnt looking to buy but a family friend had one so I took it out and it was nice, although the rear seat space has just enough room for, something a big as ummm a cat, haha. the 1990-1991 style looks a bit more driver friendly but I have never driven one and they dont look as good by far, but my biggest concern is mileage, I can get one but some of these cars have 140,000 to 160,000 on them. I mean what is your opinion on mileage, and as far as getting 250-300 HP out of a 90-91 Prelude SI, or a 1992-96 Prelude SI, what would that take, what is your opinion on superchargers VS turbo?
Let me step in here and make one quick observation. You want to take a
ricemobile and modify it to produce 250-300 hp and in almost the same
breath you're worried about fuel mileage. Now read that last sentence
again and tell me that you can't see those as two opposing goals.
As a side note, I hope you LOVE heat and humidity. That's exactly what you're going to get at Ft Jackson this time of year.
I am talking about Odometer mileage, mileage on the car etc etc. I could care less about fuel mileage, I know all about Ft. Jackson, it will suck but anyways I am looking for genuine assistance, not someone to comment about something I said. I need help with the car issues, not how I phrase things :banghead:

If I had $2,600 I would get an 87-90 Toyota Supra, It has a ton of potential, they are not that common, and the have a V-6. Not to mention a ton of aftermarket support.

get any prelude that you like, the more miles the better, you'll be paying
alot less for a car witrh 200,000 miles, with the extra money, buy a
japanese honda motor with 30k miles (B16A , B20A, etc) your car will be
quick with just that, just get cold air intake/exaust. but 250-300 HP outta
a honda (even if it has the almighty V-Tech) is kinda hard to do with 6K
including the car. :screwy:
you can never go wrong with BMW though, my frind got an 87 BMW 325i, and its completely stock, he's had that thing in water to its windows, jumped it 4 ft off the ground, changes the oil ever 15,000 miles, and its still runs like a champ. and it beat a 2001 celica GT, a 91 eagle talon ESi, and ive seen it lose to some cars with $1000 of mods by only a car lenght, and he got that BMW for $2k.
