Best all-around import?

I'm looking into a car that has more than 100 horsepower but still gets 35mpg+. I know a lot of it is how you drive it but I tired of my 94 civic dx with 100 horsepower with no options. I want a car that is fun to drive with at least 160 horse with a nice tranny, handles well, and has all the options. Right now I have a 91' 240sx with an rb20det(skyline r32) in it and it gets around 12-15 mpg and my civic gets like 40 mpg but is very slow. Any suggestions would be great!

I forgot to mention that my spending limit is $10,000.

Thats a tough question. 10k for a 160 horsepower engine that gets 35 mpg.
I'm sorry to say that its probably not going to happen. I havent seen something with more than 150 horse getting more than 30 mpg. More power means less mpg. A lot of paint shops have a saying;
" quality, time, price. Choose any two"

You now have a similar thing going. Your going to have to sacrifice something in order to get the others. Sorry :ohcrap:

Just a thought, but do you get decent diesels over there? A Golf TDi will put out 150 bhp and give 50 mpg, whilst the Ford TDCi engines are truly awesome for their size (smooth, huge torque, quiet and just perfect to live with in all conditions).

Power isn't the only thing that makes you go fast, by the way: power to weight ratio and torque are more important. So a smaller, lighter car with less power could go just as fast as a heavier, more powerful car. Why not pick up something like a Honda CRX? It'll go like stink, and should be pretty economical.

I was looking at a 99' Civic SI Coupe and it has 160 horse but I couldn't find the economy stats. Does anyone know what's different about the SI from all of the other models(dx,ex,lx)? Where does the horsepower come from? Cams, Displacement? If anyone could tell me the mpg on that car, it would be much appreciated. I'm going to give the Volkswagons some thought. I'm not sure if I could imagine myself driving one, but thanks for the reply.

Th si versions have a completly different engine then the other models, plus it has upgraded suspension and other various mods. Im not a hundred percent, but im pretty sure it gets around 23/27mpg

As for the diesels, no. america sucks. we don't get any good diesels. But yeah the TDiC is sick. I saw them all over when I was visiting europe. We do get the TDi though.

And I own a CRX. Its not the fastest car but its awesome on gas and handles like a mofo.

Golf TDi, chip it, give it a nice big exhaust, 160hp and 280ft-lbs :)

What the heck is that going to do for it??? I didn't know that putting a coffee can on for a muffler improved gas mileage?????

There are many cars out there that will reach 30 mpg if you drive them like an old grandma. The prob is that you want 160HP because you are sick of not having performance. The prob is that you trade mpg for hp in a sense. It already sounds like your 240zx is fun to drive so wh ynot keep your lil eco car that you already have???

SI has the 1.6 liter but with dual overhead cams. I drive the EX model with 127 hp, and i get 32 mpg (sometimes 35, sometimes 29). You're def. not going to get 35 mpg with the SI. Just accept the civic that you claim to get 40 mpg, that's pretty damn good. The civic I drive, I guarantee, won't be much more fun, and the SI will not get the fuel economy u wish for.

Go diesel.

What year TDI's looks the most stylish while still being affordable? Are we talking like 99-2004 or 85-89? I'm not very familiar with VW.

I did consider keeping my civic for economy and my 240 for power and I am still undecided if I want to maintain two cars and pay insurance on both. That is definetely an option I have considered. Thanks.

Wow, you REALLY have NO CLUE about diesels do you....

Want to know how to gain 40whp and 80ft-lbs in a Cummins 5.9 Diesel without a Chip....throw out the stock exhaust and slap on a 4" exhaust. A 3" full exhaust on the TDi would see very nice gains...I wasn't referring to the coffee can rice boy muffler idea you tard :banghead: . On top of it all the TDi will still get incredible gas mileage. I have a friend with a 2003 TDi and gets 50mpg on the highway with an exhaust and chip...also will murder most any civic that comes his way.

Theme of the story, big open exhausts = diesels best friend.

Looks are all opinion based and left up to you. I personally like the most current body style.
