Home  \  Asian Imports  \  Looking to buy an Import? Buying Guide

The following information below will help alot of new people interested in buying a car or even those of us who allready know most of it but just need a refresher.

Please for the love of god, stop asking up what car to purchase. People we don't know what you need and we don't know what is best for you. We also are not car gods and can't predict car races. You want some real proof, go see for yourself. The best proof is living proof. Look at the list, see what you like. Pick for yourself. If you still have questions, then ask about specific cars.(Thanks Bav). Alright, below are a list of cars and a little bit about them. In ABC Order by make.

Integra Coupe(4-Door) 1990-1993
Price: $1100-$5100
Class: Sport Compact
Layout: Transverse front-engine/front-wheel drive
Engine(s): Dohc I4 1.7L 160HP 117FT-LB
Dohc I4 1.8L 130-140HP 121-126FT-LB
Weight: 2560lbs(2605lbs)
Tranny: 5-Speed manual/4-speed overdrive automatic

GS-R(Special Sports Edition)1.7L/w VTEC

The Acura Integra is a small coupe capable of good track performance. I would'nt call this car a balls out drag racer, but it will definetly hold to its own name in autocross tournaments. Many aftermarket modifications are readily available for this car. If you are discouraged with the engine in the GS,LS, or RS there are many swaps available. I will explain that at a later time. This is a great car for a beginning import enthuisiast.

Class: Sport Compact

Engine(s): Dohc I4 1.8L 142HP 127FT-LB
Dohc I4 1.8L 170HP 128FT-LB

LS(Luxery)1.8L 142HP
GS-R(Sports)1.8L 170HP VTEC
Type-R(Special Sports Edition)1.8L 195HP VTEC

Same as the previous generation. The Integra Type-R, conned one of the greatest FWD cars ever made, is another story on its own. This is a born track star. Many available mods for the Type-R, but with its stock capabilities who will need it?

1991-95 Acura Legend
Price: $3500-$10,000
Class: Midsize Sedan
Layout: Transverse front-engine/front-wheel drive
Engine(s): Sohc V6 3.2L 200HP 210FT-LB
Sohc V6 3.2L 230HP 206FT-LB
Weight: 3516lbs
Tranny: 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual/ 4-speed automatic

Coupe/ GS Sedan 230HP 6-speed
Sedan 200HP 5-Speed

The Legend is the midsized sedan sports car of the tuner market. They come with nice beefy V6 engines and 5 or 6-speed gear boxes. Would'nt recommend this car to a person looking to compete in drag races, but this is definetly a sedan to modfiy to compete in show or just to cruise arround in style and power. Easily modified, a little more complex to work with than you average Civc, but worth good money of you do it right.

Level 2 Intermediate

Acura RSX
Price: $18,261-21,261
Class: Sports Compact

Weight: 2721lbs
Tranny: 6-Speed Manual or 5-speed manual/ 5-speed automatic

Base 160HP
Type-S 200HP

The recreation the the Acura Integra. The RSX may just be the continuation of the greatest FWD car ever made. Believe be it holds this name with prowess and pride. Not for the faint pocketed, and although there are many mods available for this car; I would'nt recomend this car for any beginner.

The infamous S2K. While not the car for your everday beginner, it is more than well worth the money if you have the cash to spend on it. Beautiful track car and comes stock pulling 13 second quarter mile times. Many mods available, but this car isn't for the faint pocketed. Nice tuner platform

Coupe 280HP

The G35 is the USDM version of what appears to to be the Skyline R35. Not exactly the easiest car to own, but I added it for some people have 28K for cars and since all of you seem to be Skyline crazy; I figure this is the closest you can get to one short of $80,000. Uses same VQ35DE as the 350Z(Z33) and GReddy has done us the favor of making a twin turbo kit. Again not for the faint pocketed.

The IS300 uses the same engine as the Supra, but in a naturally aspirated form. Be that it may, does not mean you can't bring Supra like performance to this car. The Lexus IS300 is born to drive, and if you own one or plan on buying one I highly suggest you take it out to a track and run a few laps. I garauntee you'll be stick smiling at the end of a few tire burns arround the corners. Great car, hits the wallet hard. Not for the intermediate

Mazdaspeed Protege

Whats as good as a Neon SRT-4, drives like a brand new Honda, cost the same price and comes stock with a turbocharger? The MazdaSpeed Protege of course! Beautiful car. I recommend this as an alternative to turbochargins a FWD car. Buy this the PRotege Speed and you won't be dissapointed.

In my opinions, the greatest car that mazda has ever made. The RX-7. Good for numerous ammounts of sporty auto events, and with a powerful rotary engine to drive it. There are even V8 swaps available for the RX-7. For all you drifters! This is a great beginner carp. RX-7's will smoke the doors off those AE82's and S13's. Not to mention it holds it on at the staging lights. Very good car.

The new generation of RX series. The RX-8 is a very controversial car in the import world. Not many people own it, but there are plentyful enough mods availble. If you have the money, and are up to the challange. The stock performance is well worth its buying.

One of the strongest cars that Mitsubishi has ever produced. The 3000GT. Nice Beefy V6 Engines, and good for running the quartermile. The only negatives are the weight and gas mileage. Any of the engines can be converted to twin-turbo with money and parts. Good car; a little pricey.

The 3rd generation of the powerful Nissan/Datsun Z. While these cars are capable of pushing in excess of 700HP, they are extremly heavy and should not be in the hands of most beginners. The RWD platform makes it a good candidate to compete with the 3000GT and Supra in drag racing. Drifting is possible, but due to the heavy nature of this car I would'nt reccomend it for any beginner.

Driving right side would be cool though. And no, I wasn't advertising my web site, that's just one I saw that has a lot of performance stats and other useful info (you see what happens when I try to help?). Unless I have something else to add? are you afraid I'm gonna tarnish this post or something? Shall I call you ignorant for not know the cube root of 234,234,456,678? Your statements make zero sense. My guess is that you're a 12 year old in souther georgia that reads the dictionary all day because you're such an asshole to everyone around you. And, unlike in life, on the internet, people can't talk to you face to face, so you can be an asshole and nobody can make you shut up. It's the same situation with rape convicts, they don't do it for the sex, they do it for the power. And that's what you do on the internet. You're such a fckin loser in life that the only place you can be in a place of power is on the net. You're such an asshole.

Also, I came onto these forums as a willing new guy with knowledge to share and opinions to argue, but you immediately jumped all over me. I didn't want this, it's just you. The world would be much a better place with out you, so take a hint, and cut with the flow this time, Hitler.

:( Omg you figured me out. I'm nothing but a big jerk whos really a wimp in real life and talks to people online because it makes me feel more superior. I just pretend I have actual knowledge on cars to gain respect of people I don't know because it makes me feel better inside.

Those would be the words you would want to hear in your own perfect world where everything goes your way. Fortunatley, and unfortunatley for you, the world does not work like that(I'm glad to say). No I'm not a 12yr old punk who does not "have a life". I'm a highschool student, have a part time job, and I take college classes to further my automotive knowledge. So between those three and my personal life I'm surprised I had time to write the long article myself. No I don't live in "Southern[sic] Georgia", if you would have looked at my name you'd see it says Chicago IL(dumbass). Well if you'd like me to talk shit to your face I'd be more than willing to. Just as soon as you find a way to come meet me. You want to discuss specifics I'll give you a place, date, and time where we can meet. Another one of my many challenges you have yet to accept.

So yeah that about raps it up. You claim to have come here to share your "knowledge", but oh please don't let me stop you. I suppose me "jumping all over you" in 2 threads prohibits you from activley giving valuble "knowledge" in the other ongoing 3000 huh? Yeah I did'nt think so.

Hey, now that one I take to offense. I read the dictionary when I was little because my mommy and teachers made me. Thats probably has something to do with why I have such the extensive vocabulary that I do now, but I can't spell worht a damn so its an even trade... Well let me break this down in a lamens term so you can understand it O.K.?

You have been given many challenges. Neither of the 2 have you accepted or owned up to. You have many oppurtunities to spread this "knowledge" of yours. You have yet to do that. You call me the jackass, but I'm not the one promising the community of CF knowledge and not delivering. So you have a few choices. You can f*ck off and die or shut your fecking mouth and start becoming a productive member of Car-Forums. The latter of the two would be greatly appreciated.... although I would'nt mind seeing the first happen...

My first ever post on this forum was to the skyline fan. I would happily fight for my opinion that it's not worth it in the states, but you jumped all over me. You say you have a huge vocabulary? I haven't seen a single word that qualifies as a SAT word.

You say I had the chance to post, but you've gotten me way to furious. The only thing I can think of is ripping you a new one. Why are you so hostile to new people? I was willing to defend my opinion that skyline's aren't worth it, but you just jumped all over me.

It would be way to easy for you to lie in your bio (Dumbass)

Hmm, same here, I take NEVAC automotive classes at another school, am a computer tech at best buy, and am a high school student.

This is just a bogus "challenge". You know I can't and won't accept it. Why would I want to meet you? I already know what you are, would I waste 300 bucks on a ticket to just meet you? I don't think you're worth it.

i would be a productive member of CF, but you can't seem to let me be. How many times do I have to say this? I came here as a willing new guy with an opinion to defend, but you can't seem to stand that.

Your writing style sounds a lot like Maddox. Is that who you emulate?

Can we at least call a peacefire? I would seriously perfer to stop this and get back to topic.

While your bitching is constant and never stops, you still have failed to accept 2 simple things.

1.) My words, in no way shape or form, will never prohibit you from being valuble member of these forums. So stop using that as a cop-out and just admit you have nothing to offer other than sensless opinions with no facts stand behind them. Again I'm not the jackass promising productive information and never giving it.

2.) I have given you many challenges. You call me a phony, then prove it. Just as my words can't stop you from posting informative information, they also can not stop you from proving that I'm some sort of fake person. So please I invite you to...

So until you can either redeem yourself, or aplogize for your lack of quality membership skills, you have failed our original terms of engagement. I don't need to talk about things I'm going to do. I just do them. So if you have something you'd like to add, please feel free to do so. You're wasting your prescious brain cells and time attempting to rebuttle me in everyway possible not realizing that you have been hog tied and back into a corner. You've have yet to stand on any other point than I'm a complete and utter Jackass. Ok so I am a Jackass, asshole, bastard, meanie, whatever you'd like to call me.

Now what do you have to argue now?

He doesnt need to apologize. There are no golden rules, or shit like that. Every member is equal. Some think they are superior, but they just might have more knowledge. Your challenges are way to irrational. Why would one go through all the trouble to meet you face to face. Why dont you two just use webcams? I thought would have been obvious, but then again, I realize that I am dealing with a special situation with two over-inflated egos. :banghead:

I give you that, DSM, I have nothing else to say. Do you think I want this? Do you think I enjoy bickering with kids halfway across the country? No. All I wanted was to argue the point that a skyline wasn't worth it, and you should've come up with some reasoning as to why my point was invalid instead of just calling it that.

besides, you didn't answer two of my questions;

1. Do you emulate maddox?

2. Peacefire? I don't want to continue this, and I don't think you want to either.

posted by  Godlaus

I'm not sure about the accuracy of your entire document, but you had a few mistakes for the Eclipse. The 95-99 GSX with its all-wheel drive weighs in at over 3600 lbs. Its pretty hefty. Also, you say that the 95-99 Eclipse s the same as the previous model. Not true. The 90-94 Eclipse is better suited for racing than the 95-99 Eclipse is. Also, the 95-99 turbo engines had crankwalk (a problem I never had). The 95-99 Eclipses were the best looking Eclipses ever, particularly the 97-99 years.

That last part of your statement is all opinon. It can't be proven right or wrong. Again this is'nt an indepth article. If I were to write an indepth article of each car it would be 4 post long per car. I DON'T have time for that, maybe you do? Better for racing? What kind of racing? Drag, Autocross, Rally, Nascar? You're blanket statements come on thick. As for the 3600lbs GSX you've been misinformed. What would possibly possess a car to jump from 2767lbs to 3600? Thats nearly a half ton. Simply because its AWD? No,the actual weight of a GSX is 3157. About 400 lbs differnce. Wich is probably accounted for in the extra suspension and drivetrain components. Not the 800lbs+ you would have led us to believe.... :banghead:

No, I do no emulate maddox. He has acute spelling and gramatics, something I'd probably never be able to accomplish short of giving my all to learning how to spell better. That or using a very picky spell and grammar checker... As you can clearly see neither are going to happen any time soon so don't hold your breath to see DSMers posts error free.

posted by  DSMer

Yeah, I figured that on the spelling part, but your writing style seems like it hints toward his. (The reason his is so finicky is because dumbasses like to btch at him for incorrect spelling or grammer errors)

Actually, on the weight issue, you might want to check the curb weight stats on these sites;

(Gotta go, will finish post later)

I don't know if there was a drastic model change in 1997, but all these stats are for 1997 GSXs

ok, you;re right on the weight issue, i guess. (why is there so much false info on the net?). But, "lt's stupid to say that a small compact AWD car is 3600+lbs" I never thought of the eclipse as small, but, the skyline is pretty heavy for a AWD, but I think it might be kinda big also.

posted by  Godlaus

Technicly the skyline isn't an AWD but becomes AWD sometime due to have the ATTESA E-TS (Advanced Total Traction Engineering System for All Electronic Torque Split) system. For more info http://www.car-forums.com/talk/showthread.php?t=5270 (http://)

I hope you arent serious about 'why is there so much false info on the net'.

The Eclipse is about as big as a Civic coupe.

Skyline still isn't over 3600lbs and is quite a bit bigger than an Eclipse.

Hmmm.....Just that from personal experience, they look big (But i guess I'm wrong). Will have to get closer to car next time I see one in parking lot. lol

posted by  Godlaus

I believe he was referring to the AWD drivetrain components. Iregardless if its ATTESA E-TS system it still has the basic AWD components that any other AWD car would and thats where those extra 400-600lbs come from...

-Why are convertibles so much heavier than other base models (coupes, hatchbacks.)

Oh, and if I have a chance, ill go and fine stock quarter mile times for as many of these cars as I can, as a favor return for DSM's effort he put into this thread.
