How many are in your family? Even if it is just 3, the fuel consumption in a Mini might be the same having to carry more weight. Fuel efficiency being the major point mentioned above, one of the "ricers" may be your best bet over the European cars. (blasphemy!!)

The Mini will shurely consume less that the Chevy, bet on it!

But the car is not really a family car - just too small.

If you want to save fuel, then go for a VW Golf TDI or a VW Jetta TDI, it's bigger than the Mini, and the TDI is one of the most efficient engines out there.

You do know all mini coopers are 5 or 6 speed manual transmission right? Except for the few with CVR

Malibus don't burn gas, and yes Bav was correct those "ricers" you are talking about probably have the best fuel econmy. Say it with me C-i-v-i-c. Honda Civics have good gas economy..

Hmm, if you don't want a Japanese one, and you don't like Diesel cars, like the TDI, I would say, that you should look for a VW with a FSI engine. These direct injection engines are really economic.

An other one would be a Ford Focus or a Madza 3, Toyota Corolla.

This are the ones that come to my mind!
