You clearly don't know when to give up, do you? Enjoy the ban that you were warned about here (http://www.car-forums.com/talk/showthread.php?p=247429#post247429). posted by  Cliffy

oh well so be it posted by  tinascars

There hasn't been a supermod on here in the last 2 weeks...I guess since we can't ban 'em, we should just add them all to our ignore lists.. posted by  chris_knows

I'm not sure how the ignor list works as I've never used it, but I don't like to think I'm missing anything, lol. The list of worthless users to ban is ever growing, I'll just keep adding to it with other worthless members until one of the "super" Mods decides to grace us with their presence... posted by  Cliffy

The problem is that by the time they come, the spammers have left because their posts get deleted, and the super-mods don't even know, so they make it seem like their doing stuff by banning other members who frequent the forums for things like "idle threats" and pissing everyone else off. Also, most people who are banned find out that they can just join again with another username... posted by  chris_knows

As far as the banning of members goes. I agree with you regarding spammers etc, but not really about other members. All members that have been banned in the past have deserved it in one way or another....And some never learn from their mistakes either... posted by  Cliffy

Yeah, but either way, we need at least one active super-mod.. posted by  chris_knows

I agree.... posted by  Cliffy

This is nuts. Seeing how many people google "car forums" and browse through here this site is a potential gold mine if somebody put the time and effort into making it good. However, it seems 9/10 of people looking don't like it and never come back. He can't be making too much $ off of this site, perhaps next time he comes online we should offer to buy it from him. Or just start our own. It seems there are a few people on here so often they might as well be running a site. posted by  giant016

We should work something like that out next time he's on. posted by  chris_knows

He doesn't respond to PMs. posted by  Cliffy

Anyone have the know-how and time to start a new forum? Mutany(sp?) I say! posted by  giant016

I know how to start and run a forum...but don't have the facilities to run a server etc to make it a good one.... posted by  Cliffy

How much might it cost to set up a forum with all of the servers, and then all of the monthly fees?

Couldn't just any (slightly above) average PC be a server for a forum of this size? Would you then need to get an ISP to provide an IP and bandwidth? Then how hard is it to install all of the forum software?

Does anyone know the answers to any of those? lol posted by  chris_knows

I bleieve pretty much any PC or laptop can act as a server, but you would have to keep the machine on all the time (or have the PC off and another server doing its bit...understand?). I think that's how it works anyway, lol. The cost depends on how long you want the software to run for. I beleive one could lease the software for a period of either six or twelve months at a time (costs vary but I seem to recall that a years lease could cost around £160 from vBulletin). I think you can buy the softeware too.

I'm not too sure about the other questions. posted by  Cliffy

I could probably kick in a few bucks towards a decent PC/license for Vbulletin so long as whoever was taking the $ was reputable. A well run forum should at least be able to cover the cost of the license and bandwith, if not come out ahead, which is when the donations would be payed back. posted by  giant016

I'll chip in too if someone's willing to run the forums. I'd run them (I have the time -- if it takes any), but I have no real knowledge of how that stuff works.. posted by  chris_knows

teggy set up the "car fans" website about 100 years ago... i'm sure it's still there...:2cents: posted by  dodger65

I think alot of us set up "feebie" sites, but unfortunately it's the funded ones that bring in the new members. I'd happily help towards a site if it was worthwhile, but I would rather this place got back on its feet again. posted by  Cliffy

Honestly, do you ever see that happening? UFF never seems to be here, and on the rare occasion that he stops by, you yourself said he doesn't even respond to PMs. What are the chances of him ever getting involved again? posted by  giant016
