For full features; Go to Group B
Few days ago, I was watching DSF, German sport channel. On that channel
there is show called "Motor Vision". This particular intrigued me, they
have started with cars from 80's. Lancia, Audi, etc. They have mentioned
"Group B". I thought to myself: "What's so great with European cars from
80's, I would tell that it was worst period" - But how wrong I
was!:banghead: I started reading on net about that group B, and I just
couldn't believe what I saw... Just read this which I found that someone
wrote about group B cars...
"Part of the special experience of seeing the Group B cars were their
sound. More recent rally cars have been less noisy because the turbo acts
has a muffler. The Lancia 037 didn't have a turbo, so its exhaust was quite
free. Standing next to it one felt the ground vibrate!
The Audi had a turbo, but it didn't make it quiet. In those days engineers
made the engine run rich, so as to keep exhaust temperatures low enough to
not damage the turbo (Lancia used water injection [2]). This meant that the
Audi backfired a lot. For instance, waiting for the cars in the middle of
the Lousã special stage, one could hear the backfires echoing on the
mountains, when the Audis were still several km away!"

Please read those cars' specifications and performances, if you haven't
heard of them.
Hello to all people who count me as their friend, or just happen to know
me!
ngluvakov(euro)
I'll move this to the Motorsport section. Group B was banned as it was
deemed too dangerous as far as I remember. I can see why given some of the
other cars that participated. The Ford RS200 (below) to name but one, was
deadly to the best of drivers!
http://www.urbanbomb.co.uk/rs200_3.jpg
other deadly car was the Metro 6R4 which featured a mid mounted V6 engine I
believe...:ohcrap:
http://www.johnpricerallying.co.uk/images/HomeImage.jpg
Infact, they were all as deadly as each other!
Cliffy
Lancia Delta Integrale.
The rest is shit, especially german shit (Audi).
Valter
You're saying the Audi Quattro is shit? I could understand what you said if
you backed that statement up with some sort of reasoning....or even just
state that it's YOUR opinion! For your information, that Audi was the first
true AWD rally car, and still remains the benchmark! That's the most
ignorant thing I've seen you write sinse joining CF! :banghead:
Cliffy
I don't have to state that all my posts reflect my opinion only, do I?
It's not an ignorant post because my opinion is given regardless of Audi
Quattro innovation and what you call first AWD and current benchmark.
Valter
You don't have to say that it's your opinion in every post you make, no.
However, saying that the Lancia Delta is the best group B car and the rest
is shit, especially German shit, just sounds plain ignorant
Cliffy
It may sound ignorant, I'll give you that.
But my anger on VW/Audi does not come from what they do well (and I can
recognize some good things VW has done), but from what they stink at.
When I say Audi is shit I don't take any technical specification into
consideration. Neither when I say Lancia Delta Integrale is the "thing". I
just want to put FIAT up and VW down ahhahahahaha
Sorry about that.
Valter
I understand what you are saying (sort of), and it's the exact oposite with
me. I hate FIAT, however, on saying that I understand that it's my personal
opinion. My reasoning comes from my experiences with working on
Fiat's/Alfa's and the build quality I've noticed from most of them. Now all
you had to do was explain why you feel what you do, and that alone would
have made your post alot less ignorant, if ignorant at all
Cliffy
now now ladies!!!! no arguing:laughing:
i think the group b, although extraordinary they were, they were also the
ugliest rally cars ever! (apart from the ford rs200/2000, although it did
kill henry toivenen, or whatever his name was!

True_Brit
An opinion can indeed be ignorant if it's based on mistaken information or
a lack of information, OR a bias that precludes you from seeing anything
factually.
And it's then my opinion that YOUR opinion if full of shit and should not
be listened to as that of a knowledgeable person.
How's that for opinion?
ChrisV
That's the dumbest shit I've read on this forum ahhahahahahaha
But, for a kid, you have potential to achieve higher levels.
I'll be waiting for you.
Valter
And I LOVE the Group B cars. I got to watch them live at the Olympus rallye
in Tacoma, Washington right after they were banned by the FIA. Ford RS200s,
Pugeots, the Audis, a number of Lancia Deltas (my favorites), and more.
Incredible cars.
Their bannings weren't due to being to fast for the driver's however, but
because they were too fast for the fans to get out of the way of, and fans
were dying from being hit. Modern rallye cars are just as fast if not
faster....
ChrisV
A kid? You're a moron. Get a clue, assclown.
ChrisV
So, you hate my car, Cliffy? How sad. How... ignorant.
ChrisV
I am not a wuss, as you may state, but: "...had I only addressed anything
to you before you said I'm full of shit without knowing what I'm talking
about..........................."
Post reported. Not into discussing with forum and Internet kids.
So I'm done replying to you.
Valter
assclown:orglaugh: never heard that one before! *must add that to my list*
True_Brit
Then you need to get out more...lol
Bronxie
True, but I hope that they are safer today and easier to control, and I
believe they are. My fav is Audi.
ngluvakov(euro)
shame audi doesnt rally in the wrc now!
i saw the WRC last year in wales, so loud, fast and exciting to watch!
even the JWRC was fun, watching cars such as suzuki swifts with 220BHP
razzing round a corner sideways etc
True_Brit
I've heard it...but only from CF....It's a US thing again, lol.
Sorry.......
Having said that, your car is a classic...so arguably the fit & finish
wasn't of the highest priority? And Valter.....All you have to do is hit
Search and enter the username....you should know what I mean. Also, I see
no reaso why this thread was reported, other than that it damaged some
pride....? :wink2:
Cliffy
If Group B cars continued up to now they would have been significantly
faster than today's rally machines especially with such lenient
modifications. The Ford RS200 would have been pushing 700hp+ had the
banning did not occur and who knows what kind of power we would have seen a
few years down the line. Also most have midship 4WD which made them like
Formula 1 cars for the roads.
Seeing the footages from the 80's it's no suprise spectators were killed as
they all crowd onto the roads(and move out of the way atthe very last minue
to get the best photographs).
My favourite rally cars are the Escort Mk2's-just love the excess tail
sliding!!!
fudge
Briton, you are lucky. I watched Motors TV the other day, and I saw British
rally championship. It's great and it has got many stages, so you can go
and enjoy watching it whenever you want. Where I am now, we have very lame
motosport. :(
ngluvakov(euro)
Did you ever get to see "secrets of Speed" an Audi promo film that had
Walter Rohrl driving the Group B Audi? Three in car cameras, one aiming
forward, one aiming at the driver, and one watching his feet. Showed him
FLYING through a stage with the crowd barely getting out of the way and his
feet dancing on the pedals. Amazing footage of an amazing driver in a
seriously fast car:

First vid...
There's a Lancia vid farther down the page that's insane!
ChrisV
its a great rally to watch, especially when its rained hard a day before or
on the day, when the mud is thick and wet, great on hairpins and straights
or even when its really dusty!!!

You want to know what group B was about:

Wally
Yes, but there are more safety precautions taken during todays modern rally
races. You can't find an eager fan standing in the middle of the road to
catch a last second picture of Solberg flying down in the subie.
DSMer
Which proves it wasn't because of the cars being too fast, but because of
fan stupidity. Had they instituted modern fan safety practice, we'd still
be seeing Group B cars hauling major ass. ;) A WRX going over a rise at
120+ is just as likely to kill as a Lancia Delta doing the same thing. So
which one is "too fast?" The one that has fans standing where it's going to
land. hehehehe
