who makes a good smaller sized diesel?

looking for a smaller sized diesel (no 6.0L stuff) for a project. was thinking of the VW 1.9 TDI but i want going to go RWD. Im thinking that i can have the bellhousing retrofitted or modified inorder to fit it. but what is the general concenus? really the VW would be the most affordable seeing its smaller in size and what not.
