I've had a couple of LED flashlights that were either really powerful but
ate batteries, or not powerful enough but lasted a long time. (Yes I admit
they were cheapo no-name flashlights).
So I'm willing to spend the money for the best, brightest, most durable,
rechargeable compact flashlight. Any recommendations?
This is for automotive use by the way...

How much are you looking to spend?
I've heard from a couple of sources that Pelican is supposed to be very
good. I just did a quick search:

Perhaps someone else would be willing to confirm this...

I think the main thing is defining "compact". Some people like them big
and some like them small. This is a case where size really does matter to
the individual.
I live and die with my 2AAA Mini-Mag that I've had since 1989 (don't ask me
how I know the date). It's especially good for underdash work. For
anything more demanding in the shop I use my Central Tools bounce lights.
Away from the shop the weapon of choice is a Mag 3C flashlight.

ive got a mini mag thats maybe 5" long, that thing is handy. i can hold it
in my mouth while i work on something with my hands. it came with a little
caring case i slipped over my belt. i used it while doing electrical work,
but im sure it would do fine for working on a car.

I've heard alot of good about CREE flashlights, I'll probably order one
after the holidays.

These are supposed to be good, but pricey.
