hey people... im new to this website but not to car forums in general. i
found this web site because i wanted an unbias answer to the three cars im
thinking of getting next. i currently drive an 06 scion tc. its nice but
in the spring i want to upgrade... heres the tricky part being a big car
lover we all know that well always wonder about another car and how it
would be in that... but ive narrowed it down to three i like all three
equally and i know all the ups downs prices and specs on them but its to
hard to choose
1 06 Pontiac Gto
2 05 Subaru Sti
3 05 BMW m3
any input from car owners or anyone just looking at them driving down the
road would help  thanks
GGtc4
Heres my opinion on the 3. I have driven a 2nd gen M3. Never a GTO. I have
driven a WRX, not an STI.
GTO-
Good:
Very powerful
Lots of potential
Nice car all around
Bad:
A bit heavy
Exterior is a bit basic
WRX STI-
Good:
Pretty quick
AWD (if your in snowy area)
Bad:
Cheap interior
Very young following
AWD (if you drive on highways like 99% of us, gas $$$)
BMW M3-
Good:
Always elegant
Most recent gen is very fast, 2nd gen not so much
Mature
Bad:
Possible expensive repairs?
Not very much potential compared to the GTO in particular
Thats what I think of them. The M3 is a real keeper, something you will be
happy to have in 10 years. The GTO has huge performance potential, albeit a
bit heavy and basic exterior wise. The STI is pretty quick, but it has a
childish body to it.
rudypoochris
I say the m3, if you can afford to buy one, you can afford to maintain it.
GreekWarrior
really dipshit...what in the world makes you assume that?? also why are you
giving him your opinion on an STi when you have never driven one
OP if you can afford a new M3, you can afford a newer than 05 STi, and that
would be my choice...great car all around and if you will fall in love with
the chassis and AWD when you drive it. GL, get the STi
newyorker
even if you have driven these cars yourself, you've never left the parking
lot with them, so what would make your opinion valid?
dodger65
Actually a guy I work with has an STi that I drove, and I drove my friend's
dad's m3...i havent driven the GTO nor do I really want to...do you have
anything to add or you just wana talk blind shit?
newyorker
fixed
don't worry, junior... i'm not trying to steal your "talking blind shit"
crown here...
if you're done hurling contradictory statements for a second, what about
this?
so where do you get off recommending one car of three when you've only
driven 2 of them under limited conditions and your closed ricer mind won't
let you even attempt to like the third?
dodger65
Everything depends on what you want, really. If you are very power hungry,
I'd grab the GTO. If you have a family and/or looking for a 4-door vehicle
and/or some backseat space, the Sti is a nice bet. The Sti is also the car
for someone with tough winters. Finally, if you're looking for a sporty
luxury, the M3 is the definite bet.
That being said, if you are not buying this for a family, don't live far
North, and can maintain M3 repairs, I'd choose that one in a heartbeat. BMW
is BMW. :2cents:
Nissan_Altima
Because I dont like american cars...or australian ones if you wana
nitpick...they do absolutely nothing for me...there was a video of a gto
and sti doin a 1/4 mile on edmunds i believe and the gto beat it by like .2
or .1 seconds and they still said that in the corners the sti would eat it,
and was a better car overall...plus it wont fall apart like the GTO
probbably will...
Nissan_Altima remember when we used to go to denis's house and Sasha was
there and his dad had the red GTO auto...does he still have that??
newyorker
Little or not, it's still faster than the Sti. Considerably more horsepower
and torque. Sti would take it in the twisties, but I doubt that's as
important to people as straight-line in most cases.
Yep, still has it. I saw him and it a couple of days ago. Didn't really pay
much attention though. He has a bike now too, I heard; but, I'm not sure of
anything about it.
Nissan_Altima
wow i didnt think you guys would get so heated over this... and i know
what your saying the bmw is great because you can get performance respect
and also be able to valet park it at a nice resteraunt, unlike a worked sti
which yes is kinda kidish.. but god its fast as shit ive test driven a
couple gtos and i was very impressed with the performance but the fit and
dinish wasnt what i thought it would be i dont know what it would be like
in the long run also i said 05 sti because im not crazy about the newer
2 bodystyles the 05 is the badest looking one by far... but thanks for
all the imput keep it commin
GGtc4
Yeah, CF is like that...Honestly, there have probably been arguments on the
pronunciation of tomato--stemming from a thread about why VTEC is teh
best.
All of those cars you listed are great, and none will disappoint you.
Basically, everything has been discussed already:
Pontiac GTO - Sometimes not the best build quality, but TORQUE.
Subaru STi - AWD = better handling, 4-door = better for carrying
friends/family, ample power.
BMW M3 - Powerful, relatively luxurious, status symbol, power, but a huge
problem is the high cost of maintenance.
chris_knows
AHAHAHAHAHA omg this is exactly what i keep telling people...american cars
are just not built to a high standard anymore. I would get the STi, but I
am 19...STi is the winner in my mind.
newyorker
It's not nitpicking.... we're on the other side of the world. ...
Don't give your opinion on them then.
If you want to give your opinion in this thread, make sure you preface it
by saying : "out of the M3 and the STI ..."
Otherwise you're being a hypocrite. If Mathew can't respond with an
opinion of a car he hasn't driven, you can't make a comparison of another
car versus one you haven't driven. Why you haven't driven it is completely
immaterial at this point.
I don't care that you don't like GTO's, but don't judge them in this thread
while bagging someone else for judging a car they haven't driven.
Please tell me you're smart enough to see the contradiction here??
Personally, I have driven none of those cars, but I think any of them could
be a world of fun. They all have pros/cons in different areas, so it's
just a matter of what aspects of the car appeals to you most. Maybe make a
bit of a wish-list for what you want out of the car. (eg: stylish, fast,
powerful, loud, re-sale value, roomy, etc etc...) then look at which car
satisfies your higher priorities the best. :2cents:
windsonian
you really struggle with the concept of an Australian car, don't you?
windsonian
Yep...you would be surprised though. It also weighs a bit more, and will
guzzle gas like a mother****er. To someone who wants all straight line
performance or doesnt know how to drive properly, the GTO is the winner.
However, looking at the complete package on the STi (power, toyota
reliability, factory turbo, all wheel drive, etc...they arent even making
the GTO anymore...what a great car it must have been that it got dropped.
Also, a 2005 STi can be had cheaper than a 2005 GTO, and I have heard
nothing that can reproduce the sound of a Boxer engine.
The vid I was talking about
http://youtube.com/watch?v=5ZliO4rUPvg&feature=related
"the STi will walk on the GTO on anything but a dragstrip"
newyorker
he struggles w/ any concept, windy...:wink2:
dodger65
Well when the car is a pile of ass I can throw it in the same bunch as the
rest of the turds...here is a GTO getting owned by a "slow" civic
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lnaFbYxJtk
So many years of technological advancement and they still cant keep up to a
little 4 cylinder..for shame :banghead:
newyorker
Oh and look...another 4 cylinder beating the pinnacle of american sports
cars...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amTlKeJmQr4&feature=related
to the OP, dont buy an american car...20 years ago, sure. Not now
however
STi
M3
GTslow
In that order
newyorker
what does that mean?
you are very slow in the head at grasping this concept aren't you?
windsonian
Assume what? I have driven an M3, I have driven a WRX (and countless other
subarus actually), and I am pretty damn sure I don't really need to speak
on the performance of the GTO. There are hard numbers out on it. My
comments were mainly about looks, following, and potential. My comments
imho were pretty spot on. Obviously the GTO has a shit load more potential
than the M3. The M3 alternatively is more mature and luxurious with
considerably nicer lines. The STI is very quick as well but it is a bit of
a hot wheels look which is probably why I have never met anyone over 30 who
owns one.
Nobody likes you because your an abrasive uninformed asshole. I think it
would do you alot of good to be a bit less dense and stop blindly hating.
When it comes down to it the poster just wants a substancial solid answer,
not some fanboyism BS. Your logic is flawed. You say I can't assume such
things but you yourself have claimed complete bias against the GTO. It is
pretty hard to make an educated decision if you are unwilling to view all
the options. The OP asked for opinions even from those who haven't driven
the cars. So back off dude. Your just going to type "blah blah japanese
blah blah vtec blah blah hp/liter" in every thread you post in anyway
though so I don't expect an inteligent response.
rudypoochris
2006 GTO:17/25mpg
2005 STi: 18/24mpg
I guess the STi guzzles gas like a motherf*cker as well then
What is this about not knowing how to drive properly? It has nothing to do
with anything.
-Whether or not a car is still being made doesn't mean it is a good/bad
car. There are plenty of great cars that have been discontuned. The GTO
was a plain-jane looking car, and US buyers didn't want that. In what ways
was it a bad car? It didn't look great IMHO, but it wasn't ugly. The
performance was there, the price was right, handling wasn't bad.
-A new 2006 GTO could (and maybe still can be had) at about 27K.
-Nothing can reproduce the sound of an American musclecar. The door swings
both ways.
On anything, eh? Seems to me you're trying to bring the STi up by saying
"anything" when in reality the only other thing other than a dragstrip is
the twisties.
And in reference to your Civics beating GTOs videos I'm sure we're all
impressed by a modified car beating a stock (or nearly stock) one.
giant016
thats a good idea but i feel they are all stylish and fast and i would
love anyone of them as much as the other i think in my real world you no
where you need money for shit its probably between the sti and gto
GGtc4
Comes down to 4 doors vs 2 and which GTO motor the 340 horse or the 400
horse. Also if you plan on modifications or live up in the snow that is a
concideration as well.
rudypoochris
Like I said though chris, if you can afford an M3, you can afford to
maintain it.
GreekWarrior
the 06 gto is only ls2 400 hp i dont really care about 2 or 4 door either
as long as its a 4 seater im happy snow isnt a big issue maybe 15
times a year at most
GGtc4
Personally I would take the GTO if I planned on modifying it for more power
or sheading weight. I would take the STI if I just wanted to keep it stock.
Either one will be a hell fo alot of fun in the twisties... remember
ultmate top speed through the corners is not neccessarily equal to ultimate
fun. Unless of course you are talking on the internet and trying to argue
moot points. I would go ahead and drive them both, see for yourself. :)
rudypoochris
The STi is still the winner in my mind..GTO is
newyorker
Yeah, that's true. With the money you would save by not buying the M, you
could by a lot of treats for either of the other cars lol.
chris_knows
Just another great thing about the STi..guy that detailed my car has an 05
with a JDM Genome exhaust and a tune
stock-254/257
exhaust and tune-300/345
lovely
newyorker
thats true you get such increases with such little work on those cars i
think im really leaning towards the sti plus my girlfriend loves it
GGtc4
You shouldn't be dissapointed. :)
Try them both though to be sure. My girl didn't like the WRX, I was
surprised (I thought it was fine). She prefered driving a Mustang. She
didn't like the shift feel or clutch weight(I agree on that one, it isn't
as positive and the clutch is too light), the lack of torque in the low rev
range, and the sound, but that is nit picking.
rudypoochris
shes use to a kinda stiff clutch she drives a cobalt ss fun little toy
but she came with me to drive the gto and she said its fast but ugly
then when she got in the sti she was like wow this thing is bbaaaaddd
ass and i agree im just afraid that im gonna be mad at myself one day
that i didnt have a v8 muscle car when i was a kid.. you know? one day
ill have these toys but it wont be the same then
GGtc4
STi for the win man. Its an awesome car
newyorker
Heh, my girl thought the clutch was too soft. I agree with her! Grab the
STI then. Its a tough one. I think they are both kind of ugly. Stock the
STI looks better, but some modifications to the GTO makes it look fine
imho. Tough choice. :)
