Civic is leaving in the summer and Ill be getting a new car. 19 year old
college student, need advice picking the car, dont give me financial
advice. Ive got a whole lotta cars in mind, and need some help narrowing my
list, the thing is im not 100% on what I want, something comfortable, or
something turbo, or something RWD, or a droptop. All cars mentioned are
manual trans.
Here she blows
1. SRT-4
2. Mazdaspeed Protege
3. MK4 GTI
4. MK4 GTI 20th Anniversary Edition
5. MK5 GTI non Farenheit 2 door
6. MK4 R32
7. S2000
8. BMW Z3
9. BMW Z4
10. BMW M3 E36
11. Porsche Boxster
12. E39 M5
13. E46 M3
14. MK4 Jetta 1.8t
15. Audi S4 2.7 bi-Turbo
16. 05+ Mustang GT
17. E46 325i
18. NA Miata
19. NB Miata
20. NC Miata
21. 2g MR2
22. 3g MR2
There are a whole lot more, just really confused with all this.
Here are my concerns
turbo = addiction to modding it
rwd = winter performance
vert = added maintenance cost
luxury = boredom
newyorker
well looks like your price tag doesnt really matter. have you concidered a
subaru sti, or even better a legacy spec b? to me they are the absolute
best possible car. heres why..
STI:
awd, great (very fun in my book) winter performance, amazing track
performance.
turboed, and will school anything you listed except mabye a couple of the
euro cars. but the price tag on the sti is going to be way less than those.
and with just a couple little cheap mods, you'll be hanging with those on
the track if not passing. the boost is VERY additcting and yes you will
want to mod. but the sick thing is, its pretty cheap and easy to get some
nice power out of a subaru. and they have the sickest sounding exhaust
ever. comfort wise, well i felt very comfortable in my sti, but im the type
of person who loves driving around a 400 hp, strictly built for drag racing
chevy vega as a daily driver. ive had older people like my mom, gfs mom,
friends mom, people like that say its a nice car, but its just not very fun
on long rides. but its 4 door, and has a decent sized trunk and is decently
roomy, so its a very practicle daily driver. i have a baby, so of course
that means car seat, and to me, my sti is a great family car, all the room
we have ever neeed, easy to get the car seat in and out, grocery getter,
drive it to the track, and spank the shit out of all the other cars lol.
Spec B:
sleeper status. no one exspects a legacy to be fast, they are more suddle
in the body styling. If you wanted a little bit of luxury to go with
everything else the sti has, well then this is it. legacys are very nice,
come with a lot of options unlike sti's, are very comfortable and a lot
more luxury type. but the spec b has the same transmission and engine as
the sti. so its just as fast. just as easy to mod, but its even more
practicle and a better daily driver and comfortwise.
i dont know how you feel on gas millage and prices now days.. but im
guessing you havnt given it much thought looking at some of your
suggestions, but the nice thing is these cars arent to bad on gas, you can
pull 20 mpg in certain conditions. not the best, but deff not the worst.
and if you do a utec or cobb, you can get a map tuned for good gas millage,
and get even better. of course those cost 600-800 bucks but they are the
best mod ever.
you wont go wrong with a suby, great cars, i love them, my life revolves
around them, biggest suby enthusiest ever. but good luck on the car hunt
whatever you pic!
SubarusRmyThing
I love the STi but insurance rates for it are insane and everyone has one
already. I also like the SPEC B, but too expensive. All of the above cars I
can have for 10-18k, I work at a dealership and can get cars from the
dealer auctions.
newyorker
I would suggest that you don't even try to find an E46 M5 :banghead:
jedimario
Random number generator from 1 to 22, only you know what you want.
fudge
****, I meant 39....stupid BMW numbers got me confused
newyorker
Why then are you asking these annoying noob questions if each suggestion
you'll probably come up with an excuse NOT to buy it....as Fudge has
mentioned...only YOU know which car you want to buy and which car YOU can
afford.
If you think the insurance rates for a Subaru is insane...don't even get in
the BMW/Porsche market...you can't afford it!
.
.
BavarianWheels
He is giving me cars over my budget and and I asked to pick from the list
in the first place. I got a quote for an m5 for less than an STi.
newyorker
7. S2000
8. BMW Z3
9. BMW Z4
11. Porsche Boxster
you think any of those are going to be cheap insurance? specially a 2
seater, convertable sports car like the s2000. fyi, back in 2007 we
purchased a 06 sti with 13k miles, mint shape for 21,000 at a auction. now
days it would fall into the same price range as the rest of those cars. u
can prob get a 04 for 15ish.
SubarusRmyThing
Duno what auction you go to and where but I personally saw one sell for 30k
right in front of my eyes. I dont like the 04.
Of those the Boxster would be most only because its a porsche, the others
arent that much, I checked already
newyorker
My friend's got an S2000, he says insurance isn't too bad. In fact that's
one of the main reasons he picked it over an SRT-4 and maybe a plain WRX.
jedimario
I don't get the point of this, if you decide on an e39 M5, or an M3 or an
S4, can you actually afford it? 19 year old college student right?
I mean I don't mean to give you financial advice, but you're just wasting
our time.
This sounds like another one of your weekly daydream threads. Hows that
new engine for your civic coming along anyway?
Mathew
DSM:thumbs:  It's awd so you'll have the snow fun and already
turboed. Insurance isn't that bad either. Also if you find a good one you
shouldn't have too many problems with it considering you yourself takes
good care of it and doesn't start cutting ends on modding it.
Spanky2324
Werd.
.
.
BavarianWheels
Word +1. Honestly, how many of these threads are you going to make? I've
got no problem making car suggestions, but I don't think it'll do you any
good.
giant016
Wholesale price < Retail price
I pay wholesale price
Yes I can get them that cheap...do you have a suggestion or you want to dig
further into an off topic discussion
newyorker
too old, dont like interior
newyorker
So make a suggestion or shut up
newyorker
I suggest you take your own advice in regard to these unanswerable
questions of "Which car should I buy..." and replies of "I can't afford
that car because of insurance being insane"...yet that car is on your
list...your a 19 yr old student...but don't give you financial advice...you
don't need it?
Seriously.
I suggest you get a bicycle and spare us your stupidity
.
.
BavarianWheels
An STi is not on my list...
newyorker
I suppose not, however an M3 and an M5 and a Boxter are...I'm sure it less
expensive to insure a Subaru than one of these three.
.
.
BavarianWheels
Funny cause every jackass i've seen drive one of those they always wash out
around turns.
Spanky2324
You've said several times you hate domestics. So why do you even have two
listed? We'll just cut those out right now.
In my honest opinion, generally speaking, if you can't afford a BMW brand
new, don't bother buying one used. The maintenence costs will kill you. I'd
imagine that stands true for a Porsche as well.
And something about a 19 year old college student driving an s2000/miata
just screams gay. I don't give a shit if you're not, or if someone can
appreciate the abilities of the vehicle. General population will look at
you and laugh, even more then they already do.
Your Audi is a semi-luxury turbo car. That's half your concerns. Don't even
bother considering it then.
The Protege....yeah, perfect college kid card. The TDI's...well...you can
only tune and mod them so much, so we'll leave those alone. The 2nd gen
MR2...yeah...that can stay.
2. Mazdaspeed Protege
3. MK4 GTI
4. MK4 GTI 20th Anniversary Edition
5. MK5 GTI non Farenheit 2 door
6. MK4 R32
14. MK4 Jetta 1.8t
21. 2g MR2
So that leaves you, for the most part, with a pile of small hatchback
bitch-boxes that aren't conducive to hauling anything around. Enjoy your
pared-down list.
dodgerforlife
When I was quoted by my insurance company it was higher for the STi, no
idea why
newyorker
You mean GTI?? I am heavily leaning towards that just cause its a nice all
rounder. Good interior, comfortable, good ride, looks good I think, and has
a motor that is mod friendly, the GIAC chip alone offers i think 35
horsepower and 75 pounds of torque, and then other basic boltons you can be
at 225whp without even upping the boost (minus the chipping process), and I
think for a DD, 225whp and 250 torque is plentiful, considering that its a
small hatch. Bump boost and youve got close to 300 horses, a buddy of mine
is running 16psi on his with a 19psi spike, and another has been running 22
psi through his 1.8t 01 golf for 6 years with no problems...all thats left
is to find one and tell my boss to buy it, but there are still so many
options left. Oh also the gti/1.8t doesnt cost you your firstborn to mod,
chip is like 500, exhaust another 500, intake is around 200, upgraded
sensors, blah blah you can get to that 225whp for under 2000 bucks, and
that is pretty nice. Nothing beats throwing it into high gear at low speed,
stomping the gas and taking off
newyorker
Why don't you take the advice we, you included, have given every one else
that was looking for a new car. We cant tell you what car is right for you,
you will be the one driving it and paying for it, so you need to get what
fits you. Answer these questions for each of the cars, it might even help
if you made like a checklist for each car.
1. does it look like what you want to be seen in?
2. can you fit in it, does it have enough room for luggage and/or
friends?
3. does it handle the way you want it to?
4. does it have enough oomph, or will it soon go the way of the civic?
5. can you customize/mod it?
6. will insurance costs kill you?
7. Can you afford the car to begin with?
8. can you afford to maintain it?
9. can you afford to put gas in it?
10. will it handle snow and rain?
11. will it bother you when it gets door dings, dents, and scratches, as
these can be expected on a college campus.
12. is it comfortable to sit in?
13. is it going to leave you stranded on the side of the road?
14. will it quickly go missing/end up on bricks/loose a stereo/etc?
15. Is it safe, or is it a death trap on wheels?
Just list the pros and cons for each car and decide which one best fits
your individual wants and needs. There is a reason there are thousands of
different models of cars, everyones needs are different. There is no car
that is perfect for everyone.
dvdrose18
No, I definitely meant TDI, as in TURBOCHARGED DIRECT INJECTION. If I
wanted to say GTI, I would have said it. Asstard.
dodgerforlife
Where did you ever see me mention a TDI?? Why would I get one...do you know
the price of diesel in the states..last I checked gas was 3.18 and diesel
was 4.25 a gallon, no thanks.
If a GTI I have to decide between the Regular 6-speed GTI, the 337, and the
20th Anniversary which is a pickle in itself.
newyorker
Yeah, but you get like 10 more mpg city and 15 highway. To go 100 miles (50
city/50 highway), in a gas powered Golf would cost about $12.10 (3.8
gallons), and in a diesel, $11.05 (2.6 gallons).
chris_knows
cuz they are ****ing idots who cant drive, think they are invincable, and
think because its a subaru it cant take any corner at any speed, hey get in
over their head, they get into the notorious understeer of a suby, and
wreck it. has nothing to do with the car, its the idiot kids with to much
power and not enough brains...
and if u think a sti is going to sell for 30k at auction your a ****ing
idiot and full of shit.
you dont go to auctoin to lose money on cars... you go to make money. when
you can buy a brand new one for 30k, your not going to buy one at auction
for 30k. use your head dude. auction cars sell cheap, always, just how it
is.
seriously close this day dream thread lol.
SubarusRmyThing
Dont get buthurt, i saw it sell in front of my own eyes, as well as an evo
9 mr for about the same price, this is given that the sti at that point was
35k new. I dont want a subaru, end of story, sorry if it doesnt please you
but thats not my goal, in fact if I make you unhappy I will feel better
cause you seem like a toolbag that bruises easily.

I want a car is great condition and lower miles, and im not dropping 20k
(18k for a rough shape car) on a piece of jap crap that has frameless
windows, a giant wing, and a car that everyone already has. Granted it has
great performance but its not the car for me, now stfu
newyorker
Didn't you have "jap crap" listed on your initial list?
Something seriously wrong with you and your head.
.
.
BavarianWheels
The jap crap on my list has potential and is fun...and unlike an sti it
doesnt cost an arm and a leg and doesnt put one into debt
newyorker
By definition...every vehicle has potential. One just has to have a
vision. Apparently your "vision" is one that negates financial cost...but
being only 19 yrs old, I wouldn't expect you to understand
responsibility.
Any car...expensive or free, can put one into debt.
.
.
BavarianWheels
That much was apparent when he said that he was leaning heavily towards a
GTI already, but created a god-forsaken list that was
so....well...retarded.
dodgerforlife
dont be mad cause youll never have anything better than a neon
newyorker
Don't be mad because you have to make these stupid threads to try to make
yourself look cool.
jedimario
At the end of all of this you're going to wind up with a set of new wheels
for your shopping cart.
Mathew
Aww, that's cute, considering I'm dealing on a Ram 2500. Nice try.
dodgerforlife
Ford KA, end of.
fudge
And thats better than a neon?! :orglaugh: I almost pity you.
newyorker
If you are going to make fun of the cars that we drive, why would want us
to help you choose a car? The rest of us got cars that fit our needs, they
may not be fast, they may not be fancy, but they do what we need them to
do. And you work for a dealer don't you? Aren't they usually the people
that you go to when you need advice on buying a car? You didn't like any of
the advice that was given here so far, so either you're full of sh*t, or
you already know what you want, either way, GTFO
dvdrose18
You sure talk big for being a former Neon owner, and a now 19-year old
Civic owner. At least I don't need to come to a car forum for advice on
what vehicle I should get. I know what I want, and that's a hell of a lot
more then you know.
And besides, I enjoy the 2500 series. I don't need a 3500, and I wanted the
diesel, so a 1500 was out of the running. I've driven basically every
domestic truck available, with a few exceptions. And honestly, I do prefer
the Ram 2500 out of all them.
Don't run your mouth about how domestic's suck, I don't want to hear it.
Don't run your mouth about how dodge's suck, I don't want to hear it.
Try to talk trash when you actually have something worthwhile to say.
dodgerforlife
this kid is a ****ing tool lol.
dodge diesels FTMFW!!!
got a 01 my self :) sickest trucks on the market.
SubarusRmyThing
At least im not biased to tell everyone "get a subaru" like its the
greatest thing since the wheeel.
newyorker
You're biased against anything made on this continent...
chris_knows
Not really...the Z4 is made here and I like it just fine...and the
srt-4....and the new civic...
newyorker
I worded it wrong...I meant anything that can be classified as
"domestic"--besides the SRT-4 (and possibly Neon...and maybe the 6000LE).
chris_knows
Wrong. I love the pontiac line, I think they are the best looking and
riding "domestics" to date. I also like the new Caliber SRT-4, Charger
SRT-8, 300c srt-8, and to show that it doesnt extend to only the srt line,
the corvette, the new F150, and the Plymouth prowler are also some cars I
like. I just think that domestic cars (in their majority) have a very cheap
feel to them, you get into a Honda or VW and it looks and feels like a
quality built car, a lot of domestics look and feel cheap and flimsy.
newyorker
im not bias at all, i have a great love for all cars, i own/have owned
domesitc and import trucks, domestic and import cars both new and classic,
and ive loved everyone of them. but im sorry hands down when it comes to
the most functional and versitle car that can get around in the winter
better than my 4wd truck, gets better gas millage than my v8 muscle car,
blows the doors off most cars at the strip, hauls grocerys perfectly and is
a great family car specially for loading and unloading a car seat, looks
good, is reliable all year long, sounds, performance, whatever. the suby
takes it. no other car can do that except the evo. and a couple audi's. and
when it comes down to price, the suby is pretty much the best priced of the
3. it was only a suggestion, you asked for them, so take them or leave
them. fyi...

every thing on the market.
hate to say it, but that makes it REALLLY hard to call me biased
lol.
SubarusRmyThing
HAHAHA
You bashed GTOs so often.
I love the way you just change your story to suit your needs. You used to
hate all domestics but maybe one and would argue it forever.
Pretty much all the domestic cars you listed their are mopars and your
gonna bash on the 2500. Its a mopar buddy.
New F-150. Its a piece of shit. I work on them constantly and we have SO
many problems with them but the interior is rather nice.
Oh yah and I have a honda now and its my DD and it is CHEAP and it feels
CHEAP, and the seating position is inhumane. Hate that car
Buy a GTO or an F-body if you think you can handle the transition.
The 4th gen is probably one of the best bang for the buck performance cars
now, maybe DSMs to since parts are rather cheap, wether you like it or
not.
And if you dont like the f-body because the interior then buy the GTO, it
has a very nice interior and you cant bitch about a live axle.
Wait let me guess you dont like the way it looks or something. I cant
imagine you saying you like one because it would seriously make you look
like an ass after all the bitching and moaning you did about why they were
bad cars in previous threads.
Enthusiast
^^I actually got to drive the new GTO and its a nice car but doesnt handle
as well as id like, but its a nice car all around
newyorker
We need a smiley of shit and a fan.

Yah thats right because domestics cant handle, but shit watch out for them
damn japanese econo boxes, they handle like ferraris.:banghead:
Enthusiast
Integra Type-R, Civic Type-R, no they arent good handling cars at
all....and no your head isnt in your ass....I prefer the handling of a
Civic to a camaro, at least you have control of the car in the econo box
newyorker
What actual experience do you have driving this vast selection of cars? Do
you secretly work for 'Car and Driver' or something? Cause driving the car
from the parking lot to the customer doesn't count. To make any sort of
judgment on a car's handling, you have to take it to the track, or own it
for a little while.
Mathew
hmm yeah lets take a civic and understeer it right off the road nose first
so my face splatters teh dash. id rather have the nice dometic oversteer
and have a chance at saving it before i slammeed my ass in into the wall
and save my face from atleast the steering wheel concussion.
i cant belive u said hondas have nice interiors LMAO. that cracks me up.
those are the most cheap interiors ever pretty much. not to mention man are
they shitty on the high way, very loud cars. my drag car is almost more
comfortable.
SubarusRmyThing
Funny I hear that about your precious WRX. Hmm lets see, would I take
this??

Ill stick with my honda, thanks, and ive never driven one that was loud on
the freeway
newyorker
there is a difference between good for a piece of shit and just good. I
have plenty of control over a camaro, its not my fault if your too much of
a baby to handle a measly 350hp`
Enthusiast
I think your honda looks a little more like this
http://www.thecarconnection.com/images/gallery/tmb/1118_image.jpg
My accord is loud on the freeway. Cruisin around at 3K in top gear having
to listen to the piece of shit motor gets real old.
I think I gonna put side exhaust on it to be cool.
Enthusiast
The seating position is uncomfortable, the steering is vague, the
suspension is bouncy, the engine is rough, the stereo is trash, and the
whole car feels like its going to fall apart over a bump...ill stick with a
GTI
newyorker
I dont know what year Honda you have, but maybe you should turn on the
radio. My car is perfectly fine at cruising speed, 60, 80, or 100.
newyorker
My family's had quite a few cars in my lifetime, and I am familiar with
quite a few interiors. '98 Ford Tarus, '04 Nissan Titan, '04 Saab 9-3
Aero, '93 Ford Mustang, '94 Volvo 850, '90s Miata M Edition, '97 and '04
F-150 (XLT and FX-4, respectively), '89 Accord, '93 Bronco, '05 Civic Si,
'01 MPV...and more. The Miata and Civic were the top 2, hands down. And
the Accord was nicer than many even though it was the oldest.
jedimario
Suh-weet.
Engine is rough? What does that mean?
And last I checked the 500w Monsoon systems that came in most LS1 F-bodys
was considered to be one of the best systems in a non-lux car.
giant016
Sounded like blown muffled garbage to me, maybe thats cause it was a
different stereo, or maybe the speakers were blown im not sure
Engine is rough I mean its very thrashy. Mine smoothly accelerates, this
one feels like its choking on itself, but maybe thats because of the
horrible sound it puts out
newyorker
Let me start by saying I can appreciate the sound of a properly built
import, one that sounds similar to an F1 car.
That being said, I don't know a Civic owner with a ghetto-rigged exhaust
can talk shit about a stock V8's exhaust note.
giant016
Nice thing about mine is it doesnt drone on the highway, the camaros ive
driven sound like they are about to sputter to death, unfortunately they
never do.
newyorker
An LS1 without a doubt has a very smooth power delivery. Acceleration may
not be smooth but that would just be because its actually moving. Its easy
for a 115hp car to feel smooth, it has no pull.
The LT1 has a little more strange powerdelivery. Hits hard down low and has
great midrange while slightly dying down up top.
Enthusiast
sputter to death?
Wow you really are just an ignorant ricer.
And your honda has a higher cruising rpm im am willing to bet that it
without a doubt has more drone at 70 than my Z28 and mine is LTs, no cats
and a very unrestructive muffler. Mines only spinning like 1700rpms. Whats
yours?
My accord is right under 3K at 70 and it drones like a bitch. Already have
plans on selling it and replacing it with either another f-body, HEMI 1500,
or possibly a G8GT

My Civic is around 3500 at 70, but I can't hear the engine much for the
tire noise. Camaros are definitely louder from the outside at least.

@70 3000, @80, 3500, @100 4200

Youd be surprsided how quite they are on the inside. I never realized how
loud the Z was with the cutout open til a Diesel guy told me it was
"obscene" and he runs straight pipes. SO I sat outside and had him rev
it:laughing:

S2000...120hp/L
When I said that, you said it was irrelevant, well I dont care what RPM I
cruise at, I still get 36mpg on the freeway
newyorker
What?
The conversation was about drone. A stock LS1 is pretty quiet at 2000
RPM.
Your economy car gets better gas mileage than a sports car. Want a cookie?
It wasn't even what we were talking about.

Anyone know about Saab?? I drove one today and really liked it, want to
know if there are issues I should know about. Looking at an 04/05 9-3 Arc
5-speed manual

My mom's got an '04 Aero. The sensors go a bit wacky and get annoying
sometimes, but what would you expect from GM?
jedimario
Yea they got their downsides, but they drive great, nice power, manuever
well..I didnt even mind the autobox, the semi-manual is actually a pretty
decent alternative, and I managed to get 32.1mpg on a work trip that
consisted of 200 miles of mixed city and highway and average speed of
68mph, which aint bad. I loved it, stopped at the house for coffee, my
parents loved it, its a decent car I think
newyorker
hp/l is ricer math and pretty much useless
top fuel motors.
1000hp per liter. Eat shit.
Enthusiast
Sounds like a pretty sick motor then.
newyorker
can you give me any other info on the car?? things that have gone wrong?
things you like and dislike?
newyorker
Like: Decently quick compared to what I've had, decent stereo, great looks,
sleeper of a nice car but necessarily all that fast, cheap
Dislike: Long throw to shift, way too many buttons everywhere, seats aren't
all that comfortable and you'll be sliding all over the place if you try to
auto-x
Problems: Weak parking brake handle (my mom broke it pulling up on it like
normal, I'm pretty sure it's a sub-20k mile car), too many sensors going
berserk and making the screen flash with false error messages, the
occasional true error message that leads to a shop visit, Saab badge on
both ends flakes but was replaced under warranty, waterproofing and seals
around windows prematurely wearing out...more stuff too, I don't keep track
of it all
And Enthusiast's mom gets 10,000 HP/L
jedimario
Yeah, but she's also louder than a Honda
chris_knows
Sounds like a bunch of little annoyances, ones that dont really bother me.
I took notice to the seat leather as well, it felt really cheap compared to
BMW and the like, and I was definately in and out of the seat
intermittently on ramps and such. I really liked how the car was pretty
quick and manuevarable, I was weaving around in certain situations and it
felt perfectly stable and safe. Brakes were also excelent...buttons were
confusing at first but I got the hang of them. One thing I hate is the
cupholder...its not normal, and broke easily
newyorker
You broke a car you were test driving?
jedimario
m3 all day
dominican_danny
Enlightening.
Mathew
Not really...i put my water bottle in and the thing fell apart, i pulled
over on the side of the turnpike and put it back together and never touched
it again haha
