bad odometer and speedometer after radiator drain and fill

A friend of mine got his radiator fluid drain and refilled. Shortly thereafter while on the freeway he heard a clicking sound and then his speedometer and odometer stopped working. Is it possible that some cables got knocked out of place during the radiator service? We're both at a loss as to why and how this happened. He drives a '91 Mercury Tracer 5 speed manual transmission. This sort of thing hasn't happened before and the transmission is fine.

the sound you heard was probably the speedo cable breaking that would cause the odometer and speed to quit just age and rust
