Car shuts off while driving

91 Buick Regal LTD 3.8L, 4 door

We've been driving our buick for almost 2 years now, and it's had several problems.

One of the problems is that the car will randomly stall after breaking to a full stop. This has happened both with highway and in town driving.

Similarly, my girlfriend put the car into first gear while driving downhill and the car also stalled. Was this a safety device that the car uses to prevent damage? Could she have damaged the transmission?

What we would like to know is if these problems are related, is it a transmission problem, computer, or safety mechanism?

need a little more info does the car shake when stoping like its a stick shift that you forgot to push the clutch in while stoping? does it start ok after stalling normally but when you put it into gear stalls again with a bang of the trans? if so unplug the single green wire on the side of the transmission and leave it unplugged and see if this fixes it. if so just leave it unplugged
