93 Grand Am sell or fix?
93 Grand Am sell or fix?
Ok Heres my problem. I bought a 1993 Grand Am at an auction(which people
have already told me was a mistake) in April. A few weeks after I bought
it smoke started coming off the engine. I brought it to the mechanic who I
had brought my previous car to (a 96 Lumina) and he said I have the same
problem I did with my Lumina. The Head was bad. So he showed me what he
was talking about and apparently someone tried to weld some cracks in the
engine which was where the smoke was coming from. So we paid this guy to
fix it and he did. Then when I was on my way to go pick it up he said that
it stopped running and he couldnt fix it. So we had paid for a BRAND NEW
engine and he broke it. I know we should have taken him to court but im
still carless so its the least of my worries. A different mechanic told me
he would look at it. He said it would be 200 to tear it apart and look at
it and then he would give me an estimate -or- I could sell it to him for 50
(which I think is ridiculous) so I guess what im asking is would it be
worth it to fix, or should I say screw it and go carless until I have
enough to buy a new car? I dont know ANYTHING about cars so I will tell
you what I know about it
1993 Grand Am
4 cylinder
Automatic
If you need more info I can look it up.
I guess that has the Quad Four right? Sell it before it gives you anymore trouble!
do you think I could get more thna 50 for it? The body is in perfect shape and I know its not running but 50 seems like a ridiculous offer!
If he's offering $50, he probably thinks it's worth more ... or at least worth fixing.
So I should take more than 50? I know hes using it for scrapping, or fixing then selling, which makes 50 seem like an insult to me.
I think that's what a junkyard would buy it from you for, not positive.
So he put in a brand new engine or just replaced the head? If I spent money
on a BRAND new engine (I'm guesstimating that would be about $2500) and it
didn't work now (it was working prior to his tinkering) you better believe
I would be getting compensation somehow or he would keep working on it
until he got fixed.
the guy was a friend of the family until all of this happened so everyone said I should just leave it alone because even if I did take him to court I wouldnt get anything since hes poor. Chances are I was screwed over because im a 20 year old going to some guy to fix my car. My grandpa said I should have had someone older go with me, but I guess thats what happens when your young.
You could probably get 200 for the car at least, as for keeping it and fixing it, dont bother. Its a 4 banger with doul over head cams. Hard and expensive to work on. They are known for the head gasket blown out on them. Some with only 60,000 have done it. So it wouldnt be worth to fix it. I'd start looking for another car.
