Cigarette lighter question

Cigarette lighter question
Hey,

I recently bought a radar detector, and I want it to go on when I turn my car on. My cigarette lighter is always hot so I have to unplug the detector every time I leave the car. Is there any way I could make my cigarette lighter give power only when the ignition is on?

Thanks in advance,

Viper

I did this once with my old beat up dodge pickup, when i installed my cd player i just spliced the auxilary wire to go to the cigarette lighter (i had neon lights ran by it) and it worked out pretty well...although i should have ran them from my headlights switch, but it stil lworked.

relay. wire control circuit to something that is hot in run.. radio would be best best.. do not splice like the above guy said.. just spend the extra bucks to get a fog light relay. and use big enough wires too.

That is why i spliced it, had no intentions of putting alot of money into it :P

I don't want to have too much work on it and i don't want to spend to much money.....So if i would do the radio thing...I would just split the wire up and run it to my cigarette lighter and then replace it for the power wire already on my cigarette lighter.....??

Please give me an ok on this one.....I don't want to go and blow all my fuses.

Thanks again,

relay is only 10 bucks . wires 5 .. its worth every penny for safety purposes.

i dont know how much a radar draws but u might later on use bigger stuff plugged into the cigarette socket. then ur gonna be tempted to put a bigger fuse, lots of amperage running thru small wires = not good..

oh yea hehe.. i do stuff like that on crappy cars too.. I dont take time to make everything neat..
