replacing a very worn cam sprocket on a zd fairlane 351 cleveland motor when i found broken plastic bits matching the profile of the sprocket! Anyone know the story here? Also, do I really need to replace the chain as this looks quite fine?

No, they're cars to drive because I wouldn't be caught dead in a POS Ford.

On with the show.

You seem to know about 351s vdubya, did they originally come with a plastic or nylon timing chain sprocket on the cam shaft?

Correct you are, I am familiar with the Cleveland engine. I am also familiar with the "Introduce Yourself" section which is the starting point for all new members. See ya there.

Hi

All stock vehicles made in that era have a nylon coating on the "ORIGINAL"

cam sprocket to lower noise from that area. The problem is that they tend to

crack and break up after a few years, 70000- 100000 miles. If your cam

sprocket is all metal it was replaced previously and a neglectful mechanic

didn't remove the peices. (Sometimes they fall into the pan and Oh well what

are they going to hurt). Get rid of the peices and go man.

Thanks hitchhiker, you'll get a lift anytime. I suspected as much or similar but I had it confirmed when I ordered the replacement parts. I reckon this beast ('71, original motor) has probably clocked around 2 or 300,000(miles). It was on first size rings and bearings when I went over it about 4 years ago. Hopefully we'll go another 100,000 before it's first major reco. See ya on the road ;)
