Sanding Gasket Surface?

Home  \  Repairs & Maintenance  \  Sanding Gasket Surface?

I recently removed the cylinder head of my '88 BMW 325i to replace the gasket. I have everything taken care of except the surface of the block where it meets the gasket it grimey and i havn't been able to scrub it off or find any chemicals to loosen it up. Is it ok to sand the surface to get it clean? If so is there anything extra i will have to to to make the gasket seal because of this?
