For full features; Go to 1998 SB Barina stalls, SPeedo stop working
Speedo stopped working and car know stalls when slowing, blows a 20A fuse
when turning on ignition. Instrument cluster is ok have removed and
checked. Speedo is electronic. Does any one know what tells the speedo what
speed I am doing. Is there a sensor on the diff etc, if so where abouts?
Has any one else have the same problems?
Catherine
Yes, have had almost the exact problem as you have, on the same vehicle
type but without the blown fuse. The problem was caused by a faulty speed
sensor which picks up the speed from the transmission and sends pulses to a
receiving unit in the computer for the speedo to indicate your speed. I
also had the Engine amber warning light coming on as well which indicates a
code had been recorded in the computer. The Trouble Code sent to the
computer was TC24 which is "Faulty Gearbox Speed Sensor". I was actually
able to read the code myself using the Paper Clip method so I was able to
confirm the code and advise the repairer.
This is a dangerous problem as you lose your engine along with steering and
braking at the most inconvenient places, such as roundabouts and
intersections. I wouldn't have believed that the speed sensor had anything
to do with a stalling engine but it sure does. So would suggest that you
take it to a trusty mechanic and have him investigate along those lines.
Good luck and best wishes.

I am currently having the same issue, and have been looking everywhere
online to find what terminals i should use for the old paper clip bridging
to receive my trouble codes, also do you know where abouts i would find a
listing of all the codes and what they are related to?
Many thnaks!

You must use a code reader or scan tool on anything built in 1996 or later-
the paperclip method will not work

surely a "qualified mechanic" would have known that...:banghead:

For the fault codes, two sites that helped me were:
http://www.topbuzz.co.uk/info/fault_codes/pic007.htm and
http://www.zdravstvenanjega.hr/download/ecu%20opel/fault_codes.htm
My 1998 Barina used 2 digit fault codes (refer to Siemens Simtec 56.0/56.1
ECU Fault Codes in the 2nd Webpage above).
I found that the mechanic could not actually read out the codes on his
diagnostic scanner. He relied on my telling him that the code was 24
(Speed Sensor). Replaced it and bingo. All fixed. So sometimes we have
to help these guys before they can help us.
Good luck!
