For full features; Go to Transmission problems - any major 'risks' driving with it?
Hi tech gurus,
the title says it all actually. My Integra Type R transmission is probably
on its last breaths as I can hear and feel a little bit of a resistance
when shifting gears. It's hard for me to clearly say if it's the gear box
or the clutch that's dodgy, or perhaps both. Also when I kick down the
clutch in neutral I can hear a slight high pitch 'revving' noise in the
transmission, almost the same sound as if you go reverse.
Anyway here comes my question :ohcrap:
I need to make a long trip this week (total 2000 kms). Is it safe to drive
with a dodgy transmission? I've been having this problem for a while now -
about 1000kms - without any problems so far. I've been told it's not worth
fixing the transmission anymore with the mileage this car has. This motor
has been exceptionally reliable over the last 10 years so I hope it won't
just break down on me somewhere on the motorway. I don't want to jinx it
but how high is the risk really that the transmission might crap out while
driving reasonably?
I'm sort of hoping that a brilliant tech head can reassure me, telling me
'no prob mate, you can still make 1000s of miles with a dodgy transmission
especially when it's Honda...' ;)
I've already ordered my new ride but I won't have it till the end of the
month.
cheers for any input

Hey,
I don't think any of us can really give you a good answer. Based on your
description, it sounds like maybe your throw-out bearing is going bad (if
it makes a noise with the clutch disengaged. They will usually last a long
time so I wouldn't worry about that.
If it were my car, I would check to make sure the transmission has oil in
it, and if it looks somewhat clean I would keep driving it. Also check the
clutch fluid.
Good luck.

Thanks man! That sounds much better than I expected.
Yeah, in fact yesterday a mate of mine was saying something about the
bearing and that it shouldn't be too much of an issue.
Sometimes shifting feels almost as if the clutch is not kicked all the way
down. When it happens it feels like the whole transmission could blow in
one big crunch. Then there are days where it's quite smooth and it seems
like it's all good. Weird...

Sounds likea bearing...part is usuallylike 30-50 USD, and replacing isnt
too hard, basicallylike a clutch job but a bit simpler. Fix it and enjoy
the best handling FWD car ever made.

Nice one!
Cheers mate. I'll definitely do that.
