I have a 97 jetta, gas engine (2.0), 5 speed manual. I purchased it in January 2004 (had 83000 miles on it then, 99000 miles now). After about a month my "check engine" light came on. I have come to find that the computer is reacting to a misfire issue. After the first light I had a full tune up performed (February)- plugs, wires, fuel filter, etc. I have it serviced every 3000 miles (which for me is every few weeks). Since then it has come on three more times. Each time it is a different set of codes. First it was a random misfire, then a misfire in cylinder 4. Second was a random misfire, then a misfire in cylinder 1 and 3. Third was a misfire in cylinder 2. This past event was a random misfire and a misfire in cylinder 3. The distributor looks great. Whenever the light comes on I will have noticed the engine start smooth (from cold) then gets a little rough - it then smooths out and sounds great again.
I have been driving a 91 ecodiesel for years, so this issue is new to me. Could it be the coil pack?
I much appreciate any help.
