So i recently blasted my car speakers, and noticed distortion at a surprisingly low volume(relative), i never listen that loud anyways so im content(im not buying an amp, dont want to spend the money). Then i blasted my computer speakers and noticed no distortion whatsoever, even when they were at the level that i feared for my ears. PS my speakers arent great, http://www.superwarehouse.com/Logitech_X230_Speaker_System,_Whitebox/970123 -1403/ps/455891 they cost 80 bucks originally(now 40), much less than my 200 for the speakers in my car, and my sound card is a crappy onboard one. So do computers have built in amps? is that the difference here? posted by  Enigmatic42

most computer speakers have an amplifier in the speaker themselves, that is why they are plugged into a 120 volt outlet (or some have batteries). As for the cost disparity, I am not sure, but I will look into it and get back to you. posted by  dvdrose18

depends on the source of the distortion too.
it could be in the signal or the speakers. The speakers aren't the only variable here. posted by  windsonian

My brother has those same Logitech speakers, they are very nice for the price and size. I have the z5300's, much better and surround  posted by  Mathew

There is a little bit to consider as far as your car stereo. If your deck is factory, then on newer cars they use a different speaker impeadance than aftermarket(nonfactory) speakers. I had a grand am that had, I think it was 20 ohms. Then you need a new deck with your newer speakers. Aftermarket systems are usually 2-4 ohm. If you have an aftermarket deck then check your positive and negative on each speaker. If they're backwards on one and not the other you will definately get distortion at a low or high volume. One way to check it is, if you fade or balance to one speaker and the bass gets stronger and clearer. if this is all o.k., then you need an amp. Also make sure your car didn't come with a factory amp. I'm not sure on wiring in a factory amp because they usually used a different impeadence also. Hope that helped. posted by  74stingray
