For full features; Go to 2000 Mercury Villager Idling rough
My 2000 Mercury Villager has been idling VERY rough lately and also surges
when in gear. My husband replaced the fuel cap and that didn't do any
good. My husband also pulled all the wires from the plugs without a
noticable difference. He has adjusted the timing. When he disconnected
the throttle position sensor it seemed to run better but now the check
engine light is on. The check engine light gave us codes for the knock
sensor and a possible vacuum leak (which was checked for and he didn't
find). Anybody have any ideas? Thanks

Could possibly be a dirty Mass Air Flow sensor, but there are about a
million things that could cause a rough idle. Cleaning the MAF sensors is
an easy free thing to do, even if it's not the problem it should be done if
it hasn't in 8 years. Once you find the MAF sensor (if your van has one)
take a Qtip with some rubbing alcohol and LIGHTLY clean the sensor with it.
