I just bought a 95 ford probe gt and the manual says that i should use premium gas. I really need to save all the money i can, so ive been using regular.
What are the advantages of using premium and the disadvantages of regular?
Will it be harmful to the engine and will I see a drop in performance if i use regular gas on a regular basis?
The octane levels are how volatile the gas is. The regular is very volatile and makes some engines knock because the gas burns unevenly.. That's why your manual suggests using premium - the octane level is higher so it is less volatile and burns evenly.
I have never heard of a Ford Probe GT needing High octane fuel. Depending on where you live and the price of gas, it might be cheaper to buy regular and use that money saved to buy some octance boost. If you live anywhere in Chicago-land where prices can vary .35-.40 cents between reg and premium that might be an option.
Oh ya - forgot to answer one of your questions.
As long as you don't hear the engine knock, you can go with regular. If it ever knocks, go to silver. If it still knocks then your going to have to use premium.
any other opinions out there?
this may be a dumb question-what exactly is engine knock?
