For full features; Go to Axle/CV Joint Problems? Don't Know... U tell Me!
My 99 pontiac Sunfire has now been making clunking noises when cornering,
mostly when I turn left, and it only happens when I turn. If I am not
moving and in neutral and turn the wheel it does not clunk. It is not the
wheel bearings, because I recently replaced both. All the boots on the axle
are NOT torn, in which I was thinking it was the CV joints, but can a CV
joint go bad and not have a torn boot? Any suggestions? I would rather fix
it than have it crap out on me while doing 60+ down the highway...

CV Joint. No doubt. It is very possible for the joints themselves to go bad
and still have the intact boots.

Check your engine mounts for shear or cracking, before pulling wheels off
and driveshafts out
Wally
Damn, good point. I agree with wally. Check the mounts first.
Thanks for bringing this up Wally!

What would motor mounts have to do w/ cv's going bad?
I'm not insulting your knowledge... I just have absolutely NO experience
with drive/suspension repair and diagnosis.

The constant velocity joints are just one part of the drive shaft. The CV
will knock when worn, but they will also knock if the transaxle is able to
flay around. The transaxle is bolted to the engine. With poor mounts you
can also get a situation where the driveshaft will seperate from the
transaxle and clap back in.
It's much easier to give the mounts a test with a pry bar than going the
full assault on the driveshafts. If you do change the shafts, make sure you
drain the transaxle first.
Wally
why drain the fluid? also, how do you test for bad motor mounts other than
just looking at them? I know major engine movement is a noticeable one, but
you were saying something about using a pry bar?
also when I put my car in park, it sounds like something is grinding, which
I thought minor, could it be something to do with motor mounts going bad?
cv joints/half shafts going bad?
the steering was feeling way too weird for normal operation so I just
decided to park it until I get it fixed! driving my gf's 04 Saturn Ion now,
for time being... I don't think there's one piece of metal on the body!
p.s.- u guys sure seem to know what your talking about tho... all advice
appreciated!
