i have a '99 chevy malibu 3.1 auto.

i want to put in a manual tranny, which was not offered on this car.

don't know of a direct boltup for a Malibu.

If one converts to a manual, be prepared to deal with several ECM/PCM issues as well.

i would love to just drop it onto a frame with an LS1...

if you can get a V8 and tranny in there - a 1999 Malibu is a traverse mounted Front Wheel Drive

i said drop it on a frame... but the northstar will fit.

The 3.1 is essentially the same as the 2.8 used in the earlier Citation/Feretta/Fiero. 5 speeds were available in the Fiero and Beretta (the 5 speed was discontinued in the Beretta line in 1995, well after thay had introduced the 3.1 liter there). So there should be a ready supply of 5 speed trannys in salvage yards from those cars. The Beretta should include all linkages, pedal assy., and mounts that would let you get a good start on the installation. The ONLY issue I can see is axles themselves, as they are prossibly wider on the Malibu.

Best bet, measure the axles carefully on the Malibu (and note the part numbers) and cross reference the Beretta units.

i know of the other cars with the 3.1 manual.... i used to have a 5 speed beretta..

however, mine is a 3100. im not sure of any differences..
i was hoping that the tranny frpm the alero would fit... it's a 4 cyl, but the tranny on the beretta 4 is the same as the 3.1

help!!

I am with you now.

If you could drop in a Northstar in a Malibu, that car would act like a rocket sled. That would have the same effect as dropping in a 4.6L V-8 from a Crown Vic or Mustang into an Escort

interesting insights - hang around here often?

i think the northstar will have to do it..
if i put the whole suspension system from the cadillac in, it will work.

im doing some serious modding of this car, but it will look stock.

mods will include... fridge in the passenger side airbag, grill in the trunk, entertainment system ( mofo 15 subwoofer, image dynamics horns, soundstream reference 700s, 300, dvd system)
and the engine.

from lookin at it, you wouldnt know any of it was in there.
