vw 1835 motor timing

I need advice in a BAJA bug I bought. The listed timing for the motor is about 5 btdc. It wont run at at that timing. Its runs great at about 18degress BTDC. could this be because the motor has a different cam? It was rebuilt prior to me buying it....I cant think of anything else that cold be causing the timing change. The distributor is new, all cylinders fire..... I am at a loss. thanks in advance

Somehow you're probably getting an inacurate timing reading.

Yeah this is a great one for the hobo. I would certainly think a different cam could do it. VW if your around, LET ME FEEEEEEL THE POWER for this one! :orglaugh:

Here's your advice:

1. Set it at 30 degrees BTDC at 2800 rpm.

2. The only info we have is that it's an 1835. Beyond that there are so many variations that being more specific is difficult.

Other advice could be in order...
