my daughter has a used 96 escort what is the rule of thumb for changing
the timing belt i have no idea when it was changed last is there a way to see if it's ok or do you just change it . does this have the zero clearance engine 1.9
Hi, no I don't belive it is a interferance motor, you can pull off the timing cover and take a look at it ,some of those you can get the top of it pulled out far enough to see the belt but most of the time not real good, would say change it ,better safe than sorry, good luck Slim :screwy:
If the motor is a 1.8 liter, then change it at around 60,000 miles, if it
is a 1.9 liter you can leave it to 100,000 miles. I would change it sooner
though, if it breaks you are then stranded. If the timing belt breaks in a
1.8 you can also bend valves on the 1.9 this doesn't happen.
Also change the tensioner when you change the belt.
