I have an 85 Jeep CJ-7 with a Ford T-176 4-speed medium-duty transmission. Recently, I had problems shifting. The problems built up over a period of 3 days. The first problem was shifting into 4th became difficult, then 3rd and reverse, then first and second. I parked the Jeep and pulled the shift cover off and lubed the shifting rails, and then adjusted the mechanical clutch linkage. It is shifting normally now, but when I accelerate and pull my foot off the gas without pushing in the clutch, I get a fairly lound noise very similar to gears grinding. It occurs in all gears, including reverse.
I am not adverse to pulling the transmission and working on it, but I sure would like to have an idea of what I am fixing before I try to fix it.
Anyone have a clue as to what might be happening?
