Driving an Auto like a Manual?

I own a 2000 Chevy Express 2500 Cargo Van 5.7 V8. I have these avaliable gears: P, R, N, D, 3, 2, 1.

I was wondering if I's possible to drive my van like a manual? Will it be the same for all cars? I own a import compact car and a import minivan..

It is possible to manually shift an automatic transmission, although it won't be the same for all vehicles and from my understanding it's not the best thing in the world for the trans. For instance I have a Ford AOD and when I take it to the drag strip I shift it manually, otherwise it'll shift before I hit my peak power. I only have three positions though, 1st, Drive, and Overdrive and I've learned how to "trick" the transmission into holding 2nd gear. For normal street driving there really isn't a need to shift manually.

Putting the transmission in, say, 2nd gear does not shift your transmission into second gear. What it does is allow 1st and 2nd gear to be used as normal but it will not shift past 2nd. Same with 1st, 3rd and Drive.
