Hi, I'm a long-time reader, first time poster. I just bought a 93 ford
tempo with 100,000 miles on it. It runs fine and the engine still purs like
Well, its an automatic, and once in a while, when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear, the transmission gets lost between gears and puts itself half in neutral, and half still in 2nd gear. If I give it only a little gas in this state, the engine will just rev, as if the car is in neutral. But if I give it a moderate amount (pedal halfway down) the car will jerk itself back into 2nd gear, but never make the switch to 3rd. At this point I have to pull over and put it in park. Afterwards, it runs fine.
Again, this only happens once in a while and half the time is when i'm climbing a hill. Well, I'm wondering if this is a early warning sign of serious transmission problems, or if there is any way to correct this problem without having to pay more than the car is worth. Thanks a lot, any help is appreciated.
check the vehicle speed sensor it may be causing your problem
check the linkage or speed sensor
