1996 Chevy Lumina Temp Gauge

Hi - I am having a problem with my Chevy Lumina. After about five miuntes of driving in the morning the temp gauge spikes to hot and the heater blows cold air. This lasts for about a minute and a half then the temp gauge will drop and the air gets hot. It then stays normal for the rest of my thirty minute ride to work. Is this because the thermostat is sticking? Also, can anyone advise where the thermostat is located on the 1996 Lumina? Thanks.

Definitely sounds like a sticky thermostat to me. Follow the top radiator hose to the manifold and that's where it is. Not too terrible a job to do.

Good Luck!
