So do cars. You might be suprised to find that with the same capacity engine the petrol one might actually have a higher torque rating than the diesel.
For instance, just a googling a random car ..... the Peugeot 504 1968 model:
Diesel 2112cc 48.5kW @ 4500, 124 N-m @2000
Petrol 1971cc 77.6kW @ 5200, 178 N-m @3000
