Modern cars with classic design

Hi, I'm a newbie here. I was wondering whether anyone knows of cars that are in production to date but have a classic design. For example, Bufori and the TD2000 are such cars.

I think this might be a good time for everyone to dig out the old dictionary and find out the difference between "design" and "styling".

1. What exactly is the design derived from... a '40's sedan delivery with FWD?

2. Sorry, the engine and transaxle are in the wrong end. Nuff said.

3. Name anything close... besides maybe the dash.

4. Nice look but heavy and slow... I guess Chevy didn't change much after all.

5. Sorta kinda close... but about 30% bigger.

6. Probably the closest of the bunch, still no cigar.

7. Have you ever seen a '55-'57 T-Bird?

8. Have you ever seen an old Morgan? Like a 4/4 for instance.

9. See #7 and #8.

Let's face it. The only cars you're going to find that fit the criteria are boutique cars like the Caterham 7 or cars being produced in third world countries from somebodies old tooling. Looking similar ("evoking the memory of" in ad speak) to is not the same as having the same design.

While I agree with you, I want to take a different tack and say that "design" is also properly applied to mere styling, where what you call design is also covered under "engineering." Therefore it can be correctly said that two cars share visual design but have different engineering and layout. This is coming from the use of it as laid out in #6 of the noun version of design in Merriam Webster: "the arrangement of elements or details in a product or work of art."

Those elements can indeed be styling elements.

To further confuse the issue, let's look at styling:

Main Entry: style
Function: transitive verb
Inflected Form(s): styled; styl·ing
1 : to call or designate by an identifying term
2 a : to give a particular style to b : to design, make, or arrange in accord with the prevailing mode

Function: noun
: the way in which something is styled.

At the same time, your use of "design" to identify both the look and engineering is accurate. Those of us who do design work for a living do refrain from calling the styling of a vehicle or machine the "design."

This is so the original poster can see where you and I are coming from whne we say the cars don't share designs, even if they share similarities in styling.

Sorry if you felt singled out as that wasn't my intent. You just provided the longest list to work with including cars that others had mentioned.

Morgan still do there old designs. They might be a little bit more refined, but they are exact enough to the car they built 60 or 70 years ago. Aero 8 is just a newer car to pick up on the newer market.

I KNOW I KNOW!!!!

well... sort of, they just stopped production last year, but to the best of my knowlege, pretty much the only changes through it's 62 year run were minor cosmetic details, and a slow increase in engine size over the years
actually, according to the article i have:
Quote:
The design stays faithful to the original model with a few minor changes, including chrome trim, whitewall tires and a CD player.

anyone know what car it was?
Hobo should know best of all...

another hint, in '77 the car was banned in the US because of emissions restrictions...

Well it wasn't banned, there just wasn't enough profit in selling the sedan version in the states anymore. The convertible version continued to be sold in the states until 1980, although they were none officially designated as '80 models. Dancing around the regulations you know. The last one was built on July 23, 2003 in Puebla, Mexico.

Actually, every single part was modified at least once during it's production run. Some of the changes were just so small only the hardcore know what they are.

I don't have any idea what type of car you're talking about.

I know there's one piece that never changed, but i can't remember what it is right now. It's some gasket or seal. . .

i don't know personally if it was banned or not, i was just using the terminology in the article (well, actually, now i do know...)

and if everything is changed, but only a select few know that it was changed, is that enough of a difference to verify calling it a "change" ? maybe a ....... modification?
i dunno, i'm just rambling now
