i don't know if a clone will appreciate or not, but if you keep it the same state it is in, it's price should stay steady with inflation, and as they get rarer it'll slowly go up

if you are looking for a weekend cruiser, this should be a decent car for you

if everything has been done that recently, and it has had it's regular maintenance, it could easily be a headache free car, but, depending on the restoration level of it, problems could develop further along the line, was it originally an I6 vehicle? if so, did they swap everything out that was needed to make it a proper V8 vehicle? if not, that will be a problem

as for rust, and detecting it and other surface defects, parts places such as National Parts Depot have tools that can detect how much bondo has been used to cover up damage
for specific areas of where rust might be, you'll prolly need to go to a classic Camaro specific site, there is a good amount of info here, but it's too diverse to give you exactly what you need (i'm a Mustang man myself, but most of what i've found out can apply to your problem as well)

i'd suggest getting it checked out by a qualified mechanic, try to find one of the "good ole boy" places, some place that prolly has someone working there that owned one new or something, someplace familiar with old vehicles that will know what to look for

one last question, what are your plans for the car? will it be a weekend driver? gonna be a track car? other?

1968 camaro buying advice?

I am thinking of buying a 68 camaro SS Clone. The asking price is $17000 and appears to be in excellent condition. I am going to drive it this weekend and would like advice on what to look for and what to ask.
For example....

Where are the problem areas for rust for this car?
What are common mechanical problems with this model?
How reliable are they?
How much does it weigh?
How do I verify the numbers match?
Is that a fair price for the info I provided?

Here is what I know

rebuilt and slightly modified 350
turbo 350 transmission
aftermarket gauges
New paint / new interior

No, its not going to be a daily driver but was just wondering what kind of mechanical headache its going to be.

And your right I don't know what I am getting into but I am trying to get as much info as I can so thank you for your post.

I think everything has been redone within the last 4-5 years and I doubt it has been driven very often. I hear rust is the biggest concern with older cars so I guess I will need it checked out on a lift and the usual problem areas.

Will a clone car appreciate at all?

for that price, and for what has been done (depending on how long ago it was done) it shouldn't have any problems, if it has been repainted, then it shouldn't have any rust (it might though, check all seams, bottom of doors, anywhere you can think that water, or leaves might collect, the leaves will hold water in)

It has the original motor just pepped up a bit from what the guy told me. Here is the link if you want to take a look at it. A guy I work with says its WAY over priced for a clone. But he is kind of a know it all and tends to exagerate.

This car is to replace my current weekend cruiser which is a 2001 z28 so I am expecting a huge decrease in performance in trade for something that looks REALLY cool and hopefully will hold its value unlike my 2001. This one caught my eye because it is so clean without all the striping / raised hood etc. I also like the 65-68 mustangs quite a bit but the camaro is my favorite.

looks impressive...
i'd be cautiously positive about it

but one thing you need to remember, if, for whatever reason, you feel unsure about the car, taking it for a test drive and it acts funny, strange smells after running, anything, you need to do this

Step back mentally from the car, and all thoughts of buying it
Check up on whatever set you off to it
Come back later, and ask questions of the owner

then, if you still feel "iffy" just drop it and walk off, there will be another one down the road that you'll be able to find, if you are patient and do your homework (which you seem to be doing) you should come up with a good car that'll be mostly trouble free

I really don't feel like reading right now but check to see how the wheel bearings are (Grab a tire and shake it back and forth. It you hear clanking, they're F*ucked up). That's what I do anyways.

I agree. This is the best test to check the quality and value of a used car, and truth be told the only one really needed. Don't waste your time checking for rust, structural damage, etc.

By the way. Can I have your permission to share this information with my techs? It could save us hours every day not having to look it up. Sometimes we don't feel like reading either.
