is this idea for a trans am a possibility...

my name is rob, im 18 years old living in new jersey...i have been planning to buy a trans am for a long time but havent started putting things into action until recently. I wanna get either an 84 or an 88 pontiac trans am...i wanna rebuild a 305 block and put an after market fuel injection head on it...than i wanna work out the entire air flow system (intake, pikes, headers, etc) so that no matter what work i do in the future i know my air flow is covered. im willing to spend up to $2,000 on all aspects air flow, will i be able to cover everything?. Im looking to get the car in manual but im having a hard time finding one, most the cars for sale are automatic. With all of my plans in mind, im wondering if i would come across a trans am of either year or similar body...that has no engine or transmission in it, would i save money here not replacing existing parts?... do you think this is possible or an unreasonable idea.

anyone with an imput at all about the project is welcome to comment, any knowledge would be appreciated. thanks

Why bother rebuilding the 305? You could drop an LT1 or even an LS1 in it.

i forgot to mention that i wanted to keep the budget within $6,000...this is the first stage in a series of modifications i want to do...im sure the corvette engine will go well over the budget. i intend to get the 305 block from a junk yard and rebuild it myself (except for things i gotta have it sent out for)...can the engine get from the junk yard into the car for $4000 assuming i use the other 2 on the airflow?

Are you counting the cost of the car as a different budget or is it included in the $6,000? It might be about the same to buy a 350 from a junkyard and have it rebuilt, parts are pretty cheap/popular (just any 350). Depending what all you do to the engine, you should be able to do it under $4,000 and finish the rest (airflow parts) with the remaining $2,000.

Well with no engine or transmission i say around $500, maybe less. I think it'd be pretty likely to find, just not too sure about your area. I think it is a reasonable idea that you have.

Yes it actually would be likely. Or atleast one with a blown engine and a good transmission. Just a shell with no engine or tranny I would say wouldnt be more than $1200 and one with a blown engine and a good tranny would probably be just a smidge higher (probably in the area of $1400-1600.)

just so ya know, trans ams are pretty much the same car from 85-90, so that kinda widens your search pattern a little bit. if you really have your heart set on a 305, (it takes all kinds, folks) i would suggest looking in the local "trading" papers, b/c people pull 305's all the time to drop 350's in and i've seen a lot of low mile/rebuilt 305's going dirt cheap in my area...

well to be honest...ive had experience with the 88 trans am in the past...my father owned a 79,84, and 88 at different times in his life..and i figure that its already a tight squeeze under the hood that if i put a 350 engine in the car as well as headers than im gonna have such a small amount of room to work when i have to maintence the car...im aware that the gta trans ams have the 350 corvette engine in them so maybe im wrong... i dont have my heart set on the 305 though, if the 350 is the better move than ill go with that

what do you think about those two cars, only having one picture up makes me think that theres either considerable interior damage or hidden rust
