Question "sport shift" transmissions?

Hey,

You know how some cars have a "sport shift" transmission? It allows you to use full auto tranny, but there's an optional "sport shift" mode. When you put the shift knob into drive mode, you just move it over for "sport" mode. An example is the Mazda 3. I guess you just tap the shift knob up or down to "upshift" and "downshift".

Well, has anyone driven a car with this type of tranny? If so, what's it like? And what's the purpose? Is it just for fun, so auto tranny drivers can *feel* like they're shifting? Suppose you didn't upshift; would it automatically do so?

thx.

So is it like this?:

And the stick just moves up and down (not sideways)? lol

That doesn't really sound like too much fun...

Its like this:

With shifttronic (or whatever the company in question calls it), you basically get your automatic transmission, with P - R N D, but you can move the stick to the side from D and you get a + and -. So you can choose what gear your transmission is in, somewhat like an SMG. However, you are still in an automatic, which means you still have a torque converter, and shifting is still not directly mechanical.

Thats because SMG is not automatic, it has a clutch and flywheel, and it is like driving a manual transmission. In the case of BMW's SMG, its actually a manual transmission, with a control unit controlling the transmission and clutch, instead of you. When you put SMG into automatic mode, it is simply choosing the gear for you, but it is still shifting with a clutch.

So yeah in my opinion manual shift automatics suck. If you want to rev higher in an auto, just push the accelerator harder, if you want it to shift, just ease up on it. Simple.

Oh, pretty straightforward lol but what's the point if you still get a torque converter? lol

Exactly, its still an auto. Pointless it is. Anyone who had it would grow sick of it anyway.

Yes, most of them will upshift when they hit the redline, or just below it.
