Datsun 280ZX

On my way home from a mountain bike ride, I saw a Datsun 280ZX for sale. It has no dents, scratches, or rust on the body, and the odometer says 160K miles. We looked inside, and the seats are leather and in perfect condition, and everything else looks nice, except it's missing a transmission. I didn't look under the hood either. I got his phone number, and I'm gonna call him tonight, and see how much he wants (probably no more than $2,000).

Would $2,000 be a good price? Everything except the transmission looks pretty much PERFECT.

*Moves to Asian imports*

Sounds too expensive to me, especially sinse you're gonna have to buy and install a new transmission for it!

talk to the guy and inspect it thoroughly, inside and out, and under the hood. then haggle as much as possible. also, if you plan to use it as a project car, i would look into where and how much money for a tranny. see if you are willing to dump money into that car.

That's what I was thinking. $2,000 is the max I expect to pay. He might want $1,000 or even less. Anyone know what a decent transmission would cost? Also, if it doesn't have an engine, where could I find one? I'm considering a 302 ci V8, or a flat 6 or inline 6.

A non-running 280 ZX should be far less than $1000. I've seen a number of them lately for under $500.

Using the small block Chevy is a relatively common upgrade, as it weighs the same as the I6, but sits farther back and lower, for much better weight distribution and handling, and considerably more power for very little money. A flat 6 won't work without huge amounts of cutting. I've seen numerous V6 conversions, too, from the Nissan ones to Buick Grand National turbo V6s. I've seen an early Z with the Nissan V8 in it, but that engine is HUGE and expensive.
