In Europe, Volkswagen used to sell (and may still sell!) a Lupo with a 1.4 litre diesel engine. It had a special light body, low-resistance tyres and several other tricks. It was sold as the '3L' car, or something, to signify that it used 3 litres of fuel per 100km. In reality, it was even better: one magazine review managed an astonishing 114 mpg from the thing!

This was a genuine production car, although it was apparently a bit unpleasant to drive (the tyres caused the handling to be somewhat understeer-based) and it was very expensive. Still, it was a sterling effort, and shows that it's possible ot get amazing economy without resorting to expensive and complicated hybrid technology.

Thunderbird,

Honda were actually the last to the table with a diesel engine in Europe. Their diesel has had good reviews, but it's not the most economical engine out there.

Yeah thats becuase they struck a deal with GM for some diesels in trade for their 3.5L V6. Want to know something funny, the most powerful GM N/A V-6 car is Honda powered. Heh, I love that. It's second overall most powerful V-6 in all thier lineup only losing to the S/C'ed Gen III 3.8 in the GTP (by 10hp). It even beats the S/C'ed Gen II 3.8 in the Impala/Monte Carlo.

here is the full story. on a closed track, at 30 MPH, this Opel, stripped, modified, converted to chain drive, got 376.59 mpg, way back in the 1970's.
thats the best ever recorded, and its in the guiness book of world records.
