Shaking steering wheel

When I drive faster than 62mph my steering wheel starts shaking. Around 75mph it starts shaking violently...I checked out balancing the tires...thats not the problem. My tires are in good shape (I bought them late last fall)...any ideas on what may be my problem? thanks.

Dunno what the problem is, but our escort does the same thing, only around 80-85 mph.

Did you check if your tires are out of round?

If you have a soft comp tire with a high grip rating, you may be developing flatspots. Meaning, you drive to work and park it for 8 hours in the hot sun, the tires (being soft and grippy) get flat spots because they are just sitting there, then when you go to drive at higher speeds (60mph+) the steering wheel will start to vibrate. It happens to me also, I run Michillen Pilot sports, But the tires eventually work the flat spot out so by the time I get home I am running nice and smooth.

However, if you don't have tires like mine, then you might want to check your alignment and wheel balancing.

What kind of car and how many miles?

Sounds like an outter tie rod end. Visually inspect it and see if the rubber boot is cracked. If that breaks you may end up upside down at those speeds.

There are so many things it could be though. Maybe I can help more once I know the car.

I have had 3 escorts. 91, 87, 88 GT. lol

At 80mph I do not know what to tell ya. They are throw away cars. But at that kind of speed I would say balancing or tire problems.

Did you carfax both cars guys? Just curious.

Nope, no carfax on the escort. It was a cheap $3k thing, that now has 140k miles on it and has had the engine swapped once.
