Question 01 Escort Engine Swap 83k - First time

Hi. I have decided to replace the engine from a 2001 Ford Escort myself after getting quotes around $2000 for it to be done by a shop. I purchased an engine with 3000 miles on it to put in and have very little mechanical experience but have purchased the Ford Motor Company workshop manuals for this car and have been successful removing the old engine which had a rod go through the oil pan.

The last thing I have done is separate the transmission from the old engine and next will be reattaching it to the new one.

While I have everything out, I was wondering what you guys suggest that I replace now to make it easier on me in the future. I purchased a water pump, thermostat, fuel filter, new serpentine belt, timing belt, along with some gaskets. When I received the engine, it included the water pump and timing belt on it and was debating whether or not to put the new ones on or leave since only 3000 miles and I have heard some horror stories about aftermarket water pumps.

Is there anything you suggest I check or do to the new engine before installing it? Anything I should replace, might overlook, ect? I would rather do everything right the first time and also replace anything that might need to replaced soon instead of having another labor intensive job in the near future.

Also, my brother bled off the AC into the air instead of using the pump like the manual said. Afterwards he put balloons over the ends of ends of all the hoses so that there wouldn't be contamination. I am sure there is some liquid (oil) still in the system but he said that it was all released by discharging it. Is this true? Do I still need to pump out this stuff or what should I do?

Thanks in advance for your help. I know your experience with this stuff is going to save me some rework.

engine swap.....

First time engine swaps are a learning experience at the very least! Follow the FSM and short cuts will be apparent with the 2nd-3rd-4th etc. swaps. As far as the AC system if you plan on it functioning you will have to have it flushed good. No real short cuts with AC. It's best to do it right and correctly right off the get-go rather than have to do it again the right way. Get a set of gauges (called manifolds). Is the system R12 or R134a? Makes a difference in which gauges to get. Good luck.

Thanks, will definately make sure that my ac gets flushed. Any recomendations on parts that I should change out?
