There are a few states where they are illegal. (I think mainly out East) You would have to check the local laws in those states to see what the penalty is. I believe they confiscate it at least.

In states where they are legal, what happens to you ranges from nothing to getting teased by the police. (ask me how I know)

Of course a radar detector only detects when you are getting hit by a radar gun or other radar producing device (ie some building security alarms and some automatic doors like Walgreens)

It is still up to you to not be in a position to get caught when the police turn the radar gun on.

Good luck.

how do u know???

I have been running with Escort since '87. The old units were huge compared to what you strap to your windshield today. It only covered X and K band so it was a bit out dated by '99.

Anyway, I still used it until one day I had just got off the highway with some buddies and was heading into Milwaukee (at close to higway speed - about 15 over) when we noticed the front end of a Crown Vic poking out a side street. 8O

We got pulled over. The officer asked me what was on my dash and I told him. He said "Didn't help you this time huh?" and proceded to tell me how he nailed me with laser. The guys gave me a hard time too.

Well, next day I upgraded to the Escort 7500 with laser and it has saved me a couple of times. I've been saveed with the laser alone at least 3 times. (lucky each one of them)
