BMW will replace its 3.0-liter gasoline engine with what it claims is the world's lightest six-cylinder engine...<snip> just 355 pounds.
How do they get away with this?
A 2.8/3.2/3.4L GM V6 weighs 350lbs.
The old 3.8L Ford Taurus engine weighs 351lbs.
The Buick 3.0L V6 weighs 350lbs.
the Ford Duratech 3 liter in the Taurus, and now in the Mazda 6 weighs about the same.
I could go on citing examples to the contrary of BMW assertions, but I think you all get the picture.
And that's just covering engines currently in production. My old 911 2 liter flat 6 weighed 280 lbs, and teh 2.7 in my '74 911 weighed barely any more than that. I know teh Corvair flat 6 weighed less, as well.
