Question Newbie questions

I've never had a car with turbo, but I think the next car I get (Sometime this fall) will be a WRX, which is turbocharged. To help me learn about how turbo works, and how to tune it... what should I get?
I was thinking a turbo timer and a boost controller. Would those be good investments to help me learn about how to use and tune turbo?
Should I use 2 settings, one for normal driving and a more agressive one for more gains?

Maybe you should get into the swing of the scooby now and have your questions answered by a forum(s) that is dedicated to it, like Rexnet or MRT. Granted they are inhabited by 95% boyricers, but yours is a simple query and done to death .

^^ whoa there guy. settle down.

turbo timers are a waste of money because since the invention of water cooled turbos they dont do ANYTHING.

AHH.. so is that why you need to put a coolant hose through a turbo? So it cools the oil down righT?

doesnt really cool the oil. i might as a side effect but that is not the purpose. it has a water jacket and cools down the turbo like the water jacket in the engine block cools down the cyclinders.

THen why did you say turbo timers and useless if you have a water cooled turbo? Why would you want to cool down the turbo?

the turbo timer does nothing with a water cooled turbo. there will be no difference on the lifespan of the turbo unless say you are driving hard at 6000 rpms for a while then jsut turn the car off. that is bad irregardless. timers are really just a hype thing.

The oil is the primary cooling medium for the turbo. The water jacket is for convection cooling after shutdown. Turbo timers were handy for old style turbos with babbit bearings. I would supect leaving an engine running while out of the vehicle is illegal in most places?

Wally, are you saying that coolant doesnt go through the turbo when the engine is opperating? And the oil is for lubercating the bearings.. what do you mean Wally. Dont use a theasarus I cant understand you half the time.

what wally basically said is that oil is the main thing used to cool a turbo, the water jacket that is around the turbo is for a slower, steady, safer heat transfer once the car is turned off.

And wally, I don't think its illegal to have your car running when your not in it.

yes the oil is actually in contact with the hot moving parts. The water jacket has a cast iron (or similar) barrier.

Thanks Zalight, they are really tightening up here with things like unattended engines running, keys left in ignitions, unlocked cars, children left in cars, etc.
