"thumping" in back end

i recently purchased a 1993 honda civic DX. Before me buying it it had been sitting for a few months or so. when i drove the car there seemed to be a thumping coming from the back end. when i asked the previous owner about it he said it was that because the car had been sitting, the break pads had time to collect rust and that over time, the rust would wear down and the car would begin to drive smoothly again. I am looking for some helpful advice as to weather or not this is a creditable explination for the problem and if this explination does not account for the thumping, what might be the problem. thanks for your suggestions......
